Newby here.
Just wondering what advise you could give a guy for salmon & halibut fishing( what to use, bait, lures).
Im planning on a weeks worth of fishing and Staying at Poett Nook during the Aug long weekend 2009 with the family, so it looks like a great spot to launch and be based from. With the wife & kids a few hours in the am & pm would be all I could ask of them. I'm hoping to make this a anual event.
I've got a 1850 lund tyee and am gonna rig her up with a couple of downriggers. Ive salmon fished many time before but never with my own boat.
I may be asking for alot, but any info on what Rods, Reels, Type & colour of flashers, Bait would be greatly appreciated.
What can a guy expect this time of year???

Should just be starting to pick up right around then.I've had good luck with Glo-Green coyote spoons 3.5 to 4.0 inch long.As always anchovies, rhys davis, 8 or 10 pack brined,Make sure you bring some, they can be a little hard to come by some years, purple haze, watermelon, green glo, rainbow heads six foot leaders.Hot spot flashers, good luck with green, but they all seem to produce.Make sure your hooks are RAZOR SHARP.And we set the line deep in the release clip, and crank the rod right down on so its got a whip on it when they pop the release.Depth can be critical, we start at 20 feet and, work it hard at daybreak, then move down.Good spot is Pill Point,WATCH THE SHELF!!!!!or behind back in the bay. There's a few guys on the forum that fish out of there, ask them over a few wobblie pops i'm sure they help out.Good Luck and Welcome.Dan

I would like to direct your attention to the upper right of the web page and locate the search button , try all your questions in there and review what has been said before and if you find something that has not been covered then by all means bring it on to us.
Otherwise we tend to do this over and over and just regurgitate the same information on topics with the same heading.

Luck

AL

Thanks for the reply.
Where's a good place to get a map of the area. Ive been lurking around the form for a few days and I've heard of quite a few spots and was wondering there a guy can get a map to put the pieces together.
Thanks Alley Cat

Google Earth is always very good to give you a high level overview. Otherwise, grab the local navigational charts as they have all the depths and structure.

The best thing to do is get the proper chart(s),,someone may be nice enough to pass the Chart Number to you , mines in the boat , for Barkley Sound , it's a must have ,( Nikka , Berry's perhaps ) I had mine broken up into 4 parts , then laminated , left in the boat ,for easier reading on the fly , Gps mapping is pretty standard on WCVI now , paper charts worked for us for many years , email me , happy to pass off some good starting points , good luck - FD,,;),,,

Here ya go Barkley Sound #3671,That does from Chup Point out (just past Poett Nook)Don't be roaring off into the Fog without a chart and a map gps.Offshore is Jaun De Fuca Straight #3602.I've fished up there almost 30 years and still can get confused when it socks in.They used to carry them at Island Blueprint in Victoria but i think they may not carry them anymore.Dan

You can buy them online from Crown Publications. If you use the search function and put in the chart number you are looking for, it will take you right there.

Here's the link:

http://www.publications.gov.bc.ca/

Click the "maps and Charts" button on the right of the page to get to that charts area. You can put the chart number you are searching for into the search function on the top of the window if you are looking for a specific chart. It will take you to the specific chart.
