Plums

I have been told that plums can be wrapped in newspaper, just like tomatoes, to let them ripen. Has anyone done this ? As soon as they get ripe, the racoons and ravens swoop in like Attila's hoards and leave me with a few wasp eaten windfalls.

Pick up some old fishing net and drape around your trees to keep the birds away and electric fence woth salmon skins draped over it to give the racoons a nasty jolt

Thanks guys for the reply. Unfortunately, netting is not practical and I would need a cherry picker to get them up. Electric fence ?? Maybe, but I would rather spend the coin on boat gas! So, I think I will accept less sweet plums and pick them now as the ravens are already pecking them to see if they are ready! last couple of years I waited, and only got a handful. Might also try trapping the coons.

I saw someone had a good idea, to stick a mannequin they must have bought from a store closing with a tshirt and hat on in a fig tree. Not sure if it worked but I think it might. Not sure about ravens and coons tho.

My grandpa always used to shoot a crow or a starling not sure which and hang it in the cherry tree. Not sure if that worked either I just remember him doing that. Ill ask my mom if it worked.

This does work! We used to do it all the time with our cherry tree. We used a crow.

There is a couple of new products coming on the market that might help.

1st is Splice™© .... apply with your fertilizer when you get 3 racoons per tree. You need to wait 30 days before you harvest so that they become safe to eat according to Health Canada. It has an added bonus that if your plums are eaten by birds it makes there egg shells soft and will break before the chicks hatch. Over the years you will get rid of those pesky birds.

2nd is Seazem 232 ™© .... It's a new product from Japan that has been Ok'ed by the BC government for other uses. Looks like fresh water and can be applied all season long. It works by adjusting the genetic makeup of the pest that you want to kill. They can no longer have offspring so should die off with in a few years. You only have to apply every 30 years because its sticks around that long. I hear that next year we should be getting tankers full of this "new product" because it's going to be used for fracking fluid. Cost should go down as the supply picks up. Currently Japan has 1000's of tanks of this stuff and is looking to Canada to market to BC Oil and Gas sector.

Hope this helps.....

Absolutely -we need to get as much of this stuff as possible-I understand you can drink it and also restores hair growth in older guys-much better than tree ripening or wrapping in newspaper. Good post GLG-better learning and living through science!!! LOL

Beware: sometimes killing a crow has the exact opposite effect. A huge swarm of them shows up and makes a huge racket for up to several days. this is called a "murder of crows" I have heard that it is a survival instinct and that they will follow an animal that has killed a crow until it starves to death. (maybe that last part is an old wives tale)

really? the fracking fluid is going to cause sterility now? great. at least it will only be around for 30 YEARS!!! Am I the only one concerned about this?? And splice weakens birds eggs....yes let's put more poisons in our environment....I thought birds eggs were already having that problem because of various other industrial pollutants.

No, not really, my attempt to use humor to strike a point.

Putting the continuing mounting radioactive water problem (30 year half life) from Japan to our provinces frack the heck out of our north to supply Asian markets at rock bottom prices. With us as the risk taker.

Linking lesson learned from the days of DDT and the bald eagles.

FYI I saw a TV documentary about crows. They mourn the loss of their own and have outstanding facial recognition ability. Smarter then some of us perhaps.

Well- you guys that provided such insightful and heartfelt advice for a fellow angler deserve to know how things worked out! I appreciate your input (even you Gil LOL) I picked 2/3 partially green and stored them until I figured they might be ripe --- IT WORKED!! We now have freezer plum jam, frozen sliced plums for pies and preserved (canned ) plums for the cereal and ice cream. I traded a bunch off for some pears, so we also have canned pears and pear jam. The racoons and ravens only got about 1/3 of the crop! ( in two nights!)
But I got nervous abut the bruin that had been chased away from the trees earlier-- and I had still not picked the apples. So I picked the best eating apples today.. the cooking apples will come tomorrow. Just in a nick of time it appears-- this cam shot is from last night. Wonder how plum sauce would go with bear loin??? LOL

Bear meat is excellent with plum sauce!

I was gonna say, "Watch for the bears, they're next on the plums." Didn't know you had apples ripening too. LOL! We humans have to learn how to share! None of those species will take everything. Well, except the coons.
