plb as ACR Terrafix plb 2798.4 - can i buy it in US but register in Canada ? anybody use this model - your opinion ? thanks.

...looks like a lot of people read my post, but nobody reply... anybody use plb ? do they really works ? found out that they should be canadian coded units - where is the best place to buy ? thanks .

You would still want a survival suit to go along with the unit to have a good chance of surviving long enough in the cold water, while waiting for help. The average person has 30 to 40 minutes, most offshore rescues will take longer than that. Especially if your forced into the water before making a radio mayday (fire as an example) and your not physically seen in distress.

Definately thought about it for the last week!!! dont know alot about them but am looking into them.

My wife purchased one for me for my birthday this summer before the missing boat tragedy. She got me a FastFind PLB from Trotac and I think it cost something in the $400 range. The battery lasts 5 years and will transmit a signal for at least 24 hours. I have it in the pocket of my floater suit jacket and hope to never need it.

You could carry a hand held device called a spot,It is GPS based and can be tracked on computer by your loved ones, it has a Okay button and a emergency button, put it in a ziplock bag then in your pocket

I have the acr plb not sure on the model (top of the line model last year-$600). I did register it in canada. transmits through 406 mhz radio, and gps (like epirb, and "spot" gps in one). no subscription required. hope I never have to use it. everyone should have one.
If you think about all the money we spend on fishing gear (for the same price as one electric downrigger or a islander reel) to spend $600 on an plb is nothing. don't even think about it, just buy one.

Some years ago,and prior to my first trip to the PNW with my boat, my wife bought an ACR Globalfix, self deploying EPIRB for my boat (for her peace of mind). Now that she goes with me she is wearing an ACR Aqualink PLB on her PFD as well. Yes they are an added expense but I'd be willing to bet there is more money represented by the contents of my tackle boxes than the cost of the EPIRBS. The cold water up here might or might not kill you in the time it takes for a rescue to reach you after your EPIRB goes off, but if the CG doesn't know you're in the water that time will be long enough to kill you for sure.
