Bought this from an e-Bay seller in Penticton and it just arrived. First time I have seen a Peetz close up, and it is sure a wonderful old instrument. Any advice on make sure she is properly lubed and set up?

Real simple, lube the shaft and the clicker dog and that is it. If you wind a nylon line on the spool too tightly it will warp the spool as it drys and tightens. We used to use those reels with up to a 2 pound ball on the line (pre-downrigger days). After the days fishing I would spool off all the line that we used that day with just a flasher alone on the end....then wind it back on so that it isn't going to damage the reel.

Id use braided wire on it ... then you wont blow it up

I've heard warnings about mono stretching and then tightening and damaging the reel. Braid sounds more sensible for sure. Would a silicone grease lube be a good choice?

We used to use the old Peetz rods at one time...if I go back far enough. Then a bead chain (a size that will go through the smallest eye on the rod) where you want your weight to hang ahead of the flasher or other lures. We used a bent piece of wire with an eye at one end (kinda like coat hanger thickness but more bendable) to tie a 2 foot length of mono too (lighter than your main line) and your weight tied to that. That wire would slip through one of the bead chains eyes and hang there. When you brought in your line you would slip the wire out of the bead chain then wind in the rest up to your gear to land your fish or check your gear.

Thats funny thats what I was told about braid and have hesitated putting some on my new reel I want to use for casting. Anyone heard about braid busting your spool? I heard the same thing you need some dacron (and another person said mono) backing.

No -braid has no stretch-mono has lots of stretch and if put on tight can do some damage. I personally would not worry about braid going on the reel -but dacron backing can't hurt-besides always good for a laugh when you have a big one on and the backing starts peeling out!! Really focuses your memory on the type of knot you put between them. LOL

Definately spool with 100 yds of Dacron first, we used the bead chanin 10 to fifteen feet before the flasher, like profisher says make sure the largest bead fits through the smallest eye on your Rod. We took the one or two pd ball and clipped it over the bead chain and counted the amount of pulls you let out to know how deep we were fishing. Usually 25-50 pulls thats where all the action used to be. When you got the Fish to the boat your partner would unhook the weight before you netted the fish. Definately good times!! We also used slip weights sometimes. Grease the reel once or twice a year with Graphite Grease.

Got two Peetz reels from the local Thrift Store in Sooke two weeks ago. $36 each with seniors discount ....LOL
Not cleaned them up yet, so not sure how they will turn out. One is definately in better shape than the other. Anyway, I now have three of these things and I love 'em.
