thanks FA. Might have to bite...

Anyone know if they are single or double action?

They are single action -same as the wooden ones-but for that price I might just put that on the new custom rod I ordered from Justin!! I actually have no problem with a single action on the down-rigger!!! Anyone had their mitts on one of these and care to comment??

I haven't used one yet but I was at the Peetz store a couple months ago and they seemed pretty solid. P and t also had some.

I have had one for about 8 years. Got a great deal on it and a rod at an auction. Essentially it is a copy of the Peetz wood reel made out of stainless and brass. If you like using the Peetz wood reels you will like it and it is less bulky and a little easier to use. They also make good Halibut reels and are stronger and don’t break with mono on them like the wood ones, especially without Dacron backing to absorb the pressure of the stretched spooled monofilament line.

I didn't know they have been out that long. The old wood ones are great to put out once in a while for fun. Reminds me of the old days fishing with my uncle Fred.

The one I have is the model 2000 which according to the Peetz book was first produced in 1995 and looks identical to the one in the photo. These reels apparently evolved over the years from the coated brass version 1980, to the nickel plated version 1982 and then finally to the model 2000 stainless version in 1995.

Do you fish deep, like 250+ feet with this reel for salmon?
I have fished in the 40 to 60 foot range with the wooden ones but that was a long time ago.

I used my wood Peetz a lot this past season. They were out more than my islanders. Fished it quite deep to 200+ for salmon....and somewhat foolishly at 350+ for halibut....what a work out that was lol.

I Like the wood Peetz and the stainless version. I find these reels are more pure than say an Islander MR3 or a Shimano 4000 in that fighting the fish is fairer and there is less machine advantage to the angler. That is to say that whatever the drag is set at for the salmon is also the same force the angler is fighting against when reeling in. I find that at least for myself I am not only switching quickly back and forth from the reeling position to the palming position while fighting the fish, but that I am also more likely to be adjusting the drag at times to tighten it up a little when the salmon or Halibut is running and backing it off just a little when I am reeling in.

They are all far more fun in my view to play salmon on than say the level wind type reels. With those I feel like I am not much more than a biomechanical motor providing energy to the reel which actually plays the fish for me.

Few of you know how to fish without a flasher and spoon or hootchie unfortunately. I would like to say that all of us could go back to Herring and Anchovy, but now so many of you rely on things like Level Wind reels and such. Even Islander has made an Anti Reverse reel for our less skilled. What a shame.
