Painters Lodge questions

If you're just fishing a 4 hour trip and things just go decent $20 is fine, if however you feel the guide did an exceptional job and you have a great trip out well then $40 up to whatever you feel he deserves.
Some of the senior guides just expect the second rate all the time, but if you fish any of the guides I mentioned earlier they will work for you, both to get fish and to make sure you have a good time.
That being said if your guide does a lousy job, let him know what he did wrong when you grease him.
Good luck on your trip, hope things pan out for your fishing trip wherever the tide takes you.

Unless they are completely incompetent i would tip. Especially in an area like CR where the fishing is sometimes just slow and the guide cant do anything about it.

As a guide, I rarely talk about tipping. I feel that ultimately it is up to the client.

However... As I will not personally benefit from this transaction, here are my thoughts.

You won the trip. Other than getting there, you have no real expenses. Unless the guide is incompetent, you should tip generously. A minimum of $50 per trip. 4 trips over 4 days - $200.

Base your generosity on how hard the guide works to find you fish, whether or not you actually catch any. Also, on how well he treats you on a personal level. A good guide is someone you would invite into your home for dinner. If you can't stand to be in the same lodge as your guide, never mind a 17' boat, then he's not earning his tip.

At one lodge, a group was so cheap with their tip that the guides threw it into a pot and drew cards to see who would get the whole amount. Don't be that guy!

For anyone reading this, these "rules" also apply to private guides who run their own boats and their own charter company. Lodge guides almost always get tipped well. Private owner/guides seem to get stiffed more often than not. I guess it comes down to the fact that the guy is a business owner and shouldn't need to be tipped. Hell, in this business, the guy probably needs the tips more than anyone else!

Now then, not everyone can afford to tip. Some will say that if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to take the trip. I don't believe that.

Some of my most valued tips came from people who had maxed out their spending on a trip of a lifetime and only tipped me $20. They wanted to express how much they enjoyed the trip, but could not afford to be more generous. Not a problem.

for a day trip we tipped $40 per person on our boat...so $80 total for the boat....4 person table for breakfast was a $40 tip...

Seems to me that most of the negative comments boils down to not getting any fish. Its a great resort withgood guides and staff. As for the best time to come and fish. It should start rocking for springs ,From mid june through july. Its not really a halibut fishery here but there are a few caught every year fishing for springs Tightlines Snowwhite

i never base tipping on fish caught but on guide effort. if the guy/gal is a jerk, they get a minimal amount just as a reminder. if they are working hard, have some local insight they share, can point out techniques that have worked at one time or another and in general turn out to be nice people to be around, 20% of the charter cost is what i cheerfully tip.

I definately will enjoy myself. There's no doubt about it!! I just want my dad to enjoy himself. That's all. A fish or 2 in the boat would be nice.

My tipping is always based on effort and congeniality. If I have a good time and don't catch anything, that's life. My horrible experience at Painters was one weekend 2 years ago this coming June, with one guide, but he, as bad as it was, was nearly bearable compared to the lodge experience.

They were supposed to pick us up at the train station in Comox, at the end of the line & bring us to CR.

If you're ever at that station, patronize the cafe. All revenues go to support substance & domestic violence abuse counselling as a drop-in and meeting centre when trains aren't scheduled. The volunteer-folks there are really nice people. I would never have had the chance to find that out if it weren't for the organizers at OBMG and the couple hours we waited.

Cheers!
