Very neat birds. There's an active couple out at Nanaimo Lakes that are fun to watch. It caught a fish right behind my boat once, scared the living crap out of me. I didn't see it coming. It's neat how they always turn the fish head first in the flight direction to minimize drag. I wasn't sure if he was going to get that last one in the video. It was close there. Just hang on long enough to get it over dry land.
Good eyes Adrianna (the turning the fish head-first to lower drag), they are the only fish-eating raptor that does this; they are also the only bird of prey with a specially adapted wing joint enabling them to get airborne again -with fish- after being completely submerged.
Amazing birds!
One of my coolest Osprey experiances was at the U-Vic soccer field a few years back while watching my daughters game. There's a pair that nests there on top of one of the big outdoor light towers every year and there's a reason they've chosen this spot. Every spring the hatching of the chicks would coinside with the birth of the young rabbits that used to infest the university. The parent birds were simply swooping down onto the stadium field below to catch the young bunnies - much to the chagrin of the crowd of onlooking bunny-lovers. Watched one bird take three or so young ones in an hour or so.
