On the hunt for a CC Aluminum - hull corrosion is this bad?

Hey -

Looking to buy an aluminum centre console 18-22’ plus or minus pod. Not new as prices are steep, ex lodge boat or something similar, budget is 40-60k

There’s one that’s available, been moored for past 5yrs, used regularly. Lots of barnacle growth over entire hull. Insurance survey from 22’ said hull, welds etc in good shape, that said 4yrs ago lots can happen.

My concern isn’t so much the hull exterior, barnies come of easy with no visible pitting. Biggest concern to me was the bilge area, definitely has pitting as seen in pics. It’s a 1/4” plate hull. Not my area of expertise, is it ok if treated or run lol.

Thanks for your guys help on this! Or if you know of anyone selling please share.

Cheers!

There is an 18’ lifetimer that is headed to Port Boathouse on Monday. It’s in the price range range. Low hours.
Thanks man! Think I’ve seen that one online, do you know if it’s 18’ overall? As in 16’ plus 2’ bracket/ pod or 18’ plus 2’ it looks quite small compared to others? May just be the photos

The one I’m talking about is an 18’ hull, but the back 2’ is the pod. So at the waterline it’s 18’, but the useable part of the hull is about 16’. You can store traps on the pod/ swim grid though. It’s the Lifetimer Offshore 1800 hull.

Thanks for the info! Really looking for something a little bigger.

The biggest thing about pitting is why?
Pits can be repaired, its just metal, but its all pointless if we don't know the cause and don't take corrective actions. Electrical? Grounding? Wiring? Marina? Electrolysis? Copper exposure etc....Focused In the bilge area as you describe I might be inclined to think about low quality Bilge pump with a voltage leak? Being the cause? Best guess.

It looks fairly unmaintained in there which is a flag to me.

Agree, looks unmaintained, frustrating as it’s an Ironwood. Moored in tofino, had all new wiring/ electronics in 22’ it is a 1985 hull though, surveyor in 22’ said hull in good shape, either corrosion set in or didn’t inspect bilge area

Or as suggested there's an electrical issue causing the corrosion that changed with the rewire in 22. Just because it was rewired it doesn't mean if was done correctly. A friend has an aluminum hull RIB tender that I did some fabrication/repair work on a couple times and I was amazed at the level of corrosion on it last time I worked on it. It doesn't take long in certain conditions. Welding old corroded aluminum sucks.

Well I know some that have had major issues with that sure its only the size of a quarter but sometimes you need to cut out 10 times as much to get to "good " material to even weld.. BUT dont you buy alum to never maintain a boat??? LOL thats what I always hear
