On the hunt for a boat

Thoughts on the looks of this pod?
I believe that’s a factory pod, I looked at one of these many years ago. If I can recall they had some porpoising issues with them, you could research that. That boat looks like a really solid deal.

Appreciate it. Seems like it could be but I’ve struggled to dig up much info online for these

I looked at a 602 w/pod a few years ago.The owner had to send it back to Campion because they hadn't strengthened the transom enough to support the pod and it cracked all over. They ended up giving him a new hull. Not an option anymore.

The older campion had lots of rot issues, I think 2007 and up are better but before that personally I would stay away from any of them

I had a 2004 Campion 602 I/O. Owned it for 10 years and fished all over the island. Sooke, Bamfield, Nootka, Campbell River.
Was a great boat and great in rough water. It did not have any wood in it and actually had Kevlar reinforced areas. I know very old Campions had rot issues but most boats of that vintage did. Not sure when they changed to no wood but think 200+ and you are good. The boat in the add looks the same as my 2004 so should be wood free. I wouldn't hesitate to own another one.
Biggest thing to me would be the trailer. I'd plan for new brakes, bearings, and surge hitch

Thanks. I like the looks of the overall package, has a lot of what I am looking for at a reasonable price. But the unknown quality of the pod is too much of a risk. If it was local I'd be interested in having a look for sure but an 8 hour drive is a bit much for an unknown. The current owner didn't have much information on the pod itself, he bought the boat 3 years ago. Emailed the general campion support and they were able to confirm that it was an option to have a bracket on the inboard version of the 602, and this would later become the 632

Thanks for the info. I've seen mixed information of what year they were fully wood free. I like the looks of the boats, its just the pod on this one that gives me doubts. Hard to find information on them and not a lot of others of this version out there that I have seen with a pod which could mean there wasn't a lot made or they didnt last

Not sure where you get that info, my friend has 2005 682, hit logs a few times in the inlet, extreme in Nanaimo fixed the boat and all wood under fiberglass, found some rot too when he fixed it, 2 stringer support where the inboard was suppose to be mounted( his is factory outboard, so big open hole, the 2 are cracked for about 2 feet on top, you can see the wood, unless different models are built different they have wood till 2005, he bought it new from port boat house

I was told no wood in my model as it has fibreglass grid stingers. You can see the fiberglass sandwhich under the engine. The bilge is shiny gelcoat like outside of the hull. But as you said some models could be different and maybe they need wood stringers with the pod.
As with every boat buy get a surveyor to be sure

This one is a fact , I’ve been on that boat lots over the last almost 20 years, the owner is 80 now time to let her go,, I’ve worked on it many times too

I love boat threads. I’ll chime in. Don’t discount the ‘ol Trophy. I love my 2006 year, 2052 model (21’7”) of course mine is podded which is a project that will push over your budget a bit overall. They get a bad rap but my advice would be to stay away from pre-2000 model. Less wood in the construction and a lot less rot problems typically. We have podded a few of these (including mine) and all transoms were in really good shape.

If you could find a model ‘2002’ same model but factory outboard, it’s plenty comfy for an overnighter, just doesn’t have the little sink in the cuddy. I’m 5’11” and there’s room to spare sleeping wise. The 2302 is an option as well.

Not like I’ve ridden in a lot of different boats, and nobody’s saying it’s a Grady… but I find mine handles the water just fine and I cross the straight regularly in up to 10-15 knot winds.

Thanks for the input, love hearing the first hand reviews from people. Trophy’s have been one I have been keeping by an eye on as they fit a lot of what I am looking for and are commonly in my budget range.

There’s a couple that are in my ever growing saved list of boats for sale. I’ve been saving a lot of boats that meet most of my criteria even if I’m not super interested in them, just to keep an eye on how prices are moving and what is or isn’t selling. Here’s the trophy listings for you viewing pleasure

This one looks well equipped and in a configuration I like. The drawback as discussed earlier in the thread is the etec

Recent repower. I think they’ve gone over what the max hp rating of the hull is so that would be something to look into

2302 that’s been up for a long time. Not a big fan of the cockpit configuration on this one

2002FF 21’ trophy bay liner 58hours on main engine
60k Make an offer

The hull was discussed earlier in the other thread might be a much older hull. You are paying mostly for the power and trailer. If it surveys well and the maintenance is up to date it would be worth making an offer. Might be worth a mechanical inspection including dropping the legs.

I won’t comment on the prices as they may be members.

The 23 might be a good hull, but I’m not a fan of old engines, much less old two strokes.

Yeah the cockpit area is tight on all those, due to the decently wide walkaround (which is wasted space until you need it then it’s great, also helps to bail water quickly if you take on a big wave)
That probably my only complaint on my boat, not much elbow room in there.

Oh come on, tell us what you really think 😉.

I do like that one though $60k may be a bit steep. I got more than $85k into mine total, and I know it’s probably market value of $60k max at the moment (and it’s a podded 250hp Merc, newer electronics, new trailer etc)… Great setup though, motor wise. 200 is ample. I’d be checking that one out for sure. It’s def not far off for value IMO

Agree. I had a 2004 trophy 2002. Fantastic boat. especially for the $.

The hull is a ‘97 if that changes your opinion at all
