No Sockeye in JDF but open in Osoyoos Lake

Just read a posting from DFO that the escapement to this system is double the expected. They expected about 80,000 and now estimate is about 160,000 in the lake. So a recreational and commercial opening is no in effect in the lake. I'm assuming that means that 80,000 pieces will be taken if they can get them. Funny that the average take of Sockeye in JDF for that recreational fishery is about 5,000 fish. So we suffered economic and recreational pain unnecessarily again as DFO just can't manage fisheries.

Here's one from a news article about the Osoyoos run of 260,000 last Aug. Must be yummy in 75 degree water after a quick dam-defying swim up from Astoria. Not much bigger than the kokanee I caught this morning.

Gotta protect mother nature from "over escapement"

Sucks for the fish that's a long butt migration to that lake from the US coast back into canadian waters only to get scooped up in some seine net lol.

Good ole' DFO gettin' R' done.

On the other hand, these returns are a success story, largely thanks to the work of the FN of the Southern Okanagan. With the riches, come the inevitable gripes about seines and treble snaggers from whitey and them protesting rec openings.

Marine recreational fishery retention of sockeye to start Wednesday, August 10th. Check with specific Fishery Notices for further details.
