Can you say LUCKY,LUCKY,LUCKY. Regardless of how it happened I think it is a miracle that no one died. 29 years ago I almost lost my life out herring fishing and it all happens so fast and with out warning. I learned with a near death experiance that you don't get a second chance out there and I bet that the Weeks family now have a new found respect for the ocean.

And remember....Keep your tip up!!!

Lucky everone's Ok I got a bit of the story from my brother who was out there that day.Man sounds like they were'nt thinking because if they did make it in they would of had to come back out again to get home.
I've gone threw there allot and was allways at least a little nervous.

I've only fished there 2-3 trips (beautiful place) and haven't seen anything as described here - obviously I've been lucky. I have however witnessed about a 32' transient speed cruiser (more $$ than brains) try to cross the bar only to suddenly slam on the brakes and take off up island.

As I recall we come out to the right behind the rocks and not over the center of the bar - and not near the rollers! Are there times when the entire front is cresting and it's not passable? If so, what's a guy do when he gets out there for a few hours and comes back to an impass? Go to Renfrew?

Sure glad that family made it OK, but I bet at least 2 of them will have a fear (not to be confused with respect) of the water now...very unfortunate.

Nimo my brother was just out there again he said there was no way he or anyone els would likley make it for the three days he was there. He sain it was a 12-15' wall of water right across the bar.
If you do make it out and have to come bach after the weather kicks up best thing Ive found is to get on the back side of a wave and stay on that one until you get across.
Go to slow and you end up like the people last week.
Hope that helps.

I would NOT</u> recommend, "Surfing" the backside of a 12-15 foot following breaking wave! It is very easy to lose directional control and if you fall off, you are asking for a breach and if that happens, you could very well roll it over? If you have to do it, adjust your speed staying in the trough. Also, the bigger the boat, the bigger the fall!

If you have to go through with one coming at you, hit it at around a 45-degree angle and be prepared, when you pop out the other side, which you will, the boat will fall on the backside of the wave and again, it will breach. You need to immediately, turn toward the trough, as the next wave could again roll you over.

It is not a good thing to get yourself in that position! I have done a lot of stupid things and one of my more stupid things was taking on a 30 foot breaking wave! THEY will win!

One of the things you could do if you are outside and the break is too high is to go around the corner to Clo-oose and throw the pick out in the bay to wait for the break to die down. The bay there is good shelter in a westerly.
