NextGen Downrigger....??

Thanks for that info. Still going to try my idea, want to keep it as light and streamlined as possible, those look kinda big to me . Going to use quite à lot of weight to try and get them hanging as straight down as possible, 1-2 lb. should do it.

Why not just put a small weight on the line? Doesn't sound responsible to litter the ocean floor with your chain. Picture the sea bed if everyone did this.

Ok, I'll drill à hole in à rock and have that pop off , the point is to have no weight once fish is on to improve fight. Just tryin to think outside the box à little.

Lemmy...try Sinker-Dropper.com.....or.....go to Big Jon Fishing Equipment site.

Both these make a device like what you want...the Big Jon one is red plastic...the other site has one made out of stainless steel at a really good price.

I think by the regs you are limited to a max of 1kg of weight.

Ordinary iron disintegrates pretty quick on the seabed.

There was a guy on the Sinker-Dropper site who uses "rebar".

1lb of iron on the seafloor has less effect than the guy who loses 5 20lb. lead cannonballs a year IMO.

Ikg of weight might be o.k. for jigging Halis where there is no current.......
but for trolling salmon it is a little light in deeper water.

You may want to leave the flasher OUT of the equation. With a max weight of 1kg allowed, the flasher puts too much drag on the whole rig and the it comes up shallow pretty quick.

I just used a spoon and no flasher.

What about the downriggers that can follow the contour of the bottom using a depthfinder, keeping the ball a pre-programmed number of feet above bottom? If they could figure out a way to deal with the reel taking up the slack when the ball rises, that would be a pretty good upgrade.

I realize it's not a new system off keeping a bait down, but still an improvement.

BTW...I love downriggers, particularly since I went electric. (and I love flyfishing)

Yeah, and it could steer your boat, pick your bait, play your fish, net it then light your smoke while you watch your handy-dandy rigger gut your fish.

And, if you get skunked you can always blame the crappy gear, and get your downrigger to drive you to Super Store to grab a slab to bring home to wifey!

I think Seafever your idea about some kind of submersible would really be the only way to improve on it in a new fashion. You could sensors on the side of your boat that the "subs" would be wirelessly "attached or attracted" to. You could set the depth on the "subs" and they would power down to the desired depth with your line attached via some sort of release clip. They could also have sensors that would be able to avoid any under water structure as the Hummingbird/Cannon rigs do, but with drop back abilities...? Hahaha and we'll also be living on the moon... But really where else would they go with it? Getting rid of the cable is really the only way I can think of improving it
