New to western fishing

Hey folks,

We’re moving to Vancouver from Ontario and I’m looking for tips and general recommendations to kickstart me getting into the western fishing scene.

Got a good background in lake fishing for pike, pickerel, bass, the occasional laker and brookie, etc. but I’m completely new to salmon runs and coastal shore fishing.

I’m definitely willing to drive hours out of the city but the amount of opportunity is honestly overwhelming. Any tips on good beginning locations, gear set ups, techniques, for salmon and coastal shore fishing much appreciated!

Cheers

Where will you be living? Will you have a boat? Almost anywhere is within reach of decent day-fishing. And the whole Island is within reach for multi-day trips. If you aren't accustomed to ocean conditions, I'd start gently around SE Island, and work your way up to more adventurous trips -- maybe going with more experienced guys or buddy-boating.

The Marine Weather is your friend - it predicts worst case, but that's good info. Branch out to apps like Windy for trip planning. Groups like Esquimalt Anglers get together every morning for coffee and BS - you can learn a lot about current conditions as well as general advice.

Good luck.

Shore fishing covers about 2% of the possibilities in BC saltwater. Boat is a near necessity.
