Hi everyone.

I am new to the forums here and pretty new to fishing. I took up the hobby 2 years ago and really want to get more involved with it but I see so many people have so many opinions on what lure to use and after I read or heard about all these, I went and bought alot of lures in different colors and sizes. I would like to know what lures to use for what fish and when and where.

I have octopus skirts, squid skirts, spoons, glow in the dark and a really neat squid with a light in it.

I live in Parksville and have to fish from the beach because I have no boat. I went on a boat one time with a family friend and caught fish, a rockfish I think.

Anyway, can anyone here give me some help on how to use each lure and what I can expect to catch?

throw spoons from shore. get a boat for the skirts, squid stuff, that would be for trolling. good luck.... head to the west coast of the island and hire a guide if you want to really learn about ocean fishing..

Welcome to the forum. May want to get into fly fishing if you don't have a boat. Can be pretty hard to catch ocean fish from the shore. The fly could be more productive and interesting for you. Otherwise you can jig flounder, greenlings , dogfish from piers but many areas are closed.

Quickest was to get up to speed is to join the Parksville/Qualicum Rod and Gun Club. Introduce yourself at a meeting and ask for help and advice. Some really helpful guys there.

X2 - I thought I knew a little about fishing until I went out with a guide. Always a good idea when you go to a new area, too.
Remember fishing's just the excuse...go for the good friends, good brew and good times.
Looking forward to hearing from you here! Lot's of great people and good advice - that's always free, with a money back guarantee.

It's great to hear you are picking up fishing as a hobby. I think that how I evolved as a sport fisherman is a good example of how many fisherman get started. I bought an aluminum boat for cheap and then a couple manual downriggers. Two Canadian tire Mooching combo rods and white hoochies and two green flashers. A tent from Costco and then the addiction started. This Island is a beautiful place and for a small initial investment you can explore and enjoy many wonderful moments. I don't know how old you are and what point in life you are at but when I was starting out my wife and I were in our early years together. I would never take back the times my wife and I could do nothing but take shelter from the rain in our little tent or the time my wife landed a 25lb spring while 8 months pregnant at Camel Rock. Your memories will different but great nonetheless and I'm excited for you.

Take care,
James
