Fishery Notice
Category(s): RECREATIONAL - Salmon
Subject: FN0399-Sockeye: Areas 23 - Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet Daily Limits
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Effective 00:01 July 1, 2005 until further notice the daily limit for sockeye
salmon in Area 23 is four.
The 2005 pre-season forecast for Somass Sockeye is for a below average return
of 500,000 sockeye. At this runsize under normal conditions the expected sport
catch is approximately 45,000 sockeye. Throughout the May and June period
escapement, catch, abundance data and environmental conditions have been
closely monitored. The recreational catch to June 26 was approximately 1800
sockeye.
Somass River water levels and temperatures have had a positive influence in
escapement to date. Based on catch to date and remaining expected catch Stock
Assessment staff indicate that it is unlikely the recreational fleet will
exceed their expected catch for this runsize. Commencing June 30th and weekly
thereafter inseason runsize reforecasts will be conducted and results will be
released each Friday.
