New Shimano GT Plus Moochers

I have heard from 3 sources that the price will be higher then that. Dealer cost is about $90. They 2 have to make a dollar on them. I would think $120-130.

looks like I'll be in the market too for this - my M1+ thread stripped on me - time to look at new brand

Deewar25, go and call Daiwa service dealer (something Mike's Reel Repair or so in Vancouver). They will ship you a new center pin for a few cents. Done the same earlier this year.

I heard that Berry's Bait & Tackle in Richmond has a Daiwa M1 Plus with upgraded drag for ~$40 more than the regular M1 Plus.

Does anyone here know what the difference is and whether it is an official Daiwa product, or something done by the retailer?

A friend got his hands on these. These are basically the SAME DARN REEL! The drag knob is a bit different, the coloration a bit different, the handles are a bit different...the drag system is the SAME---upon opening them, there's nothing majorly different!!!

Add a drag ring and basically you have the same reel....whoop de do.

Hey FM you are basically right. But you forgot one other improvement. These new reels have Dartanium drag washers where they didn't before. These are stronger, more durable washers which will improve the overall drag, which in my opinion was the only real (no pun intended) weak point of this reel over time.

Long live wild salmon!!!

Agreed...the "Dartanium" is the selling point though..that's it. Forget the other stuff...SAME REEL!

Ummm-- what part of a marketing gimmick is "dartanium" ??? Cant find it on the Periodic Table!! [:0]

:D EXACTLY "Dartanium"

:D:D:D

Since I have a few 4000’s still kicking around does anyone know if the new drag can be retrofitted to the old reels given the info that they are basically the same reel? That is assuming the drag washers are affordable given that they are made out of a rare alloy that apparently fell off of an alien space craft in the 1950’s. :D

The inner spool washers are the same and the dartanium washer is the size of the washer that is in the Calcutta TE reels. The bigger washer makes for a smoother and more efficient drag. If you think that the old 4000 and this reel are the same then you will be missing out.
One of my suggestions was to make the handles interchangeable with the old 4000, but it to far into the process to make the change. It would have been a great upgrade for those who wished to keep fishing with the old reels. The new reel has 4 upgrades from the old reel.
1)Drag: Larger, better water proofing and increased drag range
2)Handles: Larger and better feel
3)Palming ring: Smoother and doesn't burn your hand on long runs
4)spool: Stronger and won't split under extreme operating conditions

They didn't reinvent the wheel with this reel but they did improve a reel that has been around for more than a decade. I have 30 coming for my boats in the spring.

Seems like the same junk reel [V] I was hoping they would have made drastic changes in appearance and upgraded the quality of the drag system.

Has anyone tried a production model yet ?
seen them on Nikka's website for $109.99

A guy I know fished with one the other day---2nd time out. He went to tighten up one handle and there is this little gold plug which covers up the head of the fastening screw. That little plug went flying--never to be seen again. The handles are a little larger, but offer no grip relative to the old 4000GT Handles...and are kind of "flexible"--which may be good or bad depending on preference.

I think the price tag is a little rich for these reels. They only have the price tag higher because they're trying to sell through the old 2000 and 4000 Models before kicking production into high gear I think...then I think prices will come down. This makes sense as you DO have to support your product. There are not a lot of these reels around he told me---at least that's what the salesperson told him...and there may not be for some time depending on demand for the old reels. No sell through, therefore no big stock at retailers---and to get production costs down per widget, you need higher quantities.

If you're not a single action reel user---the market for these reels is generally limited to the West Coast of the North American continent.

When you look at it, Islanders and knock offs have turned a corner on the market and are eating a sizeable market share now among those who fish.
