This could be a little late for some, but I just heard they are at the sportsman show at the Tradex Center for $99. $30 cheaper then they are around here.

Steveston Marine has them there for $95 and a free Shimano hat when you go to the Shimano booth at the show with your new reel.

Should I order my self a case?

These new reels are noticably heavier than the old ones. I have used a set of the brand new ones and the drag system isn't all that much of an improvement based on what I can see. I run my drags light when playing the fish so I don't know quite what the fuss is about. If anything, I think the new reel is better balanced. On the set that I used, one of the drags was already on it's way to being toasted after just 1 week of Downrigger fishing.

Same animal, just a different look.

Is there any other reel around $100 that performs better?
:)

Yes, yes there is. The old Shimano 2000 or 4000...priced at $60 and $74.99 respectively....at a local lower mainland dealer! (Out of respect I won't post that here!)[:p]

I'm told by a reel repair man that the 2000gt is bullet proof.
they don't have the same problem as the 4000 with exploding spools.

In the last couple years of the old 4000's they said they fixed the problems. They sent me a box of new spools to replaces the ones that were blowing up.
