Going to buy a couple new riggers the 1106 or 2106 what are your thoughts is the new model and digital counter worth it or should I stick with the tried and true!!
As someone with a pair of HP's (2 seasons) I like the old ones better.
If you fish deep (200ft) then there might be a case for getting them.
They do pull a 15lb CB faster then you can reel in the line but the product still has some bugs.
I will be sending one into repair when the fishing season ends.
Digital counters are nice but they are not as important as being part of a bullet proof system.
Had one pop a belt off and that's never happened to me with the old ones.
The other one seems to not let line out very fast at times.
Had that one apart for cleaning then it seems to work for weeks on end.
Then when you are fishing them it starts to act up and you end up pulling line out to help it along.
I marked one of mine so I can keep track of what DR is acting up.
I don't like the shape of the new cases as they don't sit well when in storage like the old ones.
Went through many a pound of lead till I found a system that blew a fuse before dumping the lead into the drink.
Not the best solution, but me and my friends have smashed the lead into the pulley more than once.
The problem is these new ones will suck up 2 or 3 feet with just a hit of the "green button of death."
So if you fish deep and use 15lb CB's they are great.
If you don't then stick with the old school.

Bang on , im sure with time , they will be perfected , BUT
, i have no issues with the previous generation , just an all round great reliable rigger ,
with the best warranty in the buis..
The thing I like about the new one is the lid able to blow off when trailering have lost one lid and had many other close calls. Also the counter on the old one will fog up but I have heard the new digital ones do not.
Not sure it would matter if your fishing at 40 to 60 feet but I sure agree with you when your fishing at 200 to 220 feet.
Have been on other boats and you can sure notice the difference between running the HP's and the old ones.
It seems to take forever to get your CB from down deep.
Have not tried pulling a crab trap yet and I hope I never do. LOL.

Never had a problem with the lid blowing off but, if it is not locked I can see that as a problem.
Yes the new one can fog up but not as bad as the old ones.
I would add that you can hit a button on the counter to activate a light.
Great feature when your fishing at oh dark thirty.

exactly, last year was a learning curve for sure with the HP's, but wouldnt go back now, stoppers are the key, and I now have braid on one
with Derby's tuna cord set-up and never have to worry about the stoppers anymore either , will be switching the other side to braid and tuna cord shortly,
and NO it doesnt make a difference in catch stats with braid or steel, both sides catch!! lol

Go to your local ski/snowboard, or dive shop, and get a small spray bottle or a wax puck of "anti-fog". Same stuff you would use on your dive/snow/MX goggles to stop fogging. A little drop on the inside of the view window for the counter should solve yer fogging problems...
I had the opprotunity to use the HP ones in July on a friends boat.
I personally did not like them.. way too fast. Most I know with them are using 20 lb balls to try and slow them down.
I don't see the advantage of having the ball up and still tons of line out there to still reel in. I like bringing up the gear on the downriggers.
The counters did fog up and I have heard they are NOT warrantied.
I have heard they are very bad for reliability also.
If I was buying new riggers tomorrow I would buy the old style tried and true ones after having used both.

The fog is inside the counter and it's a sealed unit.
Best I can describe is like the fog you get in a fish finder.
Rare for sure but have seen it on the odd morning.
No problem as you can still see the depth and the light helps also,
