New Coho Side Channel in Nootka Sound

Well as many of you know I was not at the chum derby this year as I was up in Nootka Sound at the Conuma Hatchery Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Saturday. This incredible coho side channel was thanks to a major undertaking of the Nootka Watershed Society and many Volunteers. This side channel will eventually contribute 1/3 of all the coho in Nootka sound when phase two is completed this year. What is unique about this approx km long channel is it's not reliant on rain/run off water to provide prime conditions as it will be fed from it's own water system at the hatchery offering a much more controlled enviroment. The building of this channel will also free up hatchery resources that will now be more focused on Chinook and Chum Salmon. When there on Saturday I also had the chance first hand to already see pairs of Coho salmon coming up phase one to spawn already.

Congradulations to all for your hard work and dedication on such a fantastic project.

Also thanks to A channel for its great coverage of this event already it has been on the news 4 times.....

Cheers Kevin
