Sorry if I missed another post on this, but here we go again. DFO has slipped in another set of new restrictions for Area 28 (Howe Sound). Full notice here:
"All commercial and recreational bottom contact fishing activities for prawn, shrimp, crab and groundfish are prohibited within portions of Subareas 28-1, 28-2 and 28-3, to protect five additional Howe Sound glass sponge reefs. This includes the following fishing activities:
Prawn and crab by trap, Shrimp and groundfish by trawl, Groundfish by hook and line.
Downrigger restrictions will follow for recreational salmon trolling and will be implemented as of April 1, 2022 (restricted via Condition of Licence) at the five sites.
These closures will be in effect for the long term."
DFO is yet to release an updated map, which should tell the full tale. They reference "five sites" that will soon be restricted for downrigger fishing - guessing this is the five sponge reefs in sub-areas (28-1, -2, -3), and hopefully not all five Howe Sound sub-areas (28-1 to -5). Either way, it look as though some of our favorite winter chinook spots will soon be a thing of the past, "for the long term".
Yet another ****** gut punch .
