Tying up sum gear tonight ,

read the thread on standard hoochie tying the other day , i still tie all mine with tandem 4/0 gammy's , my preference ,

iv'e never really dragged needle fish around , sounds like winters will prefer this choice at times , over the next few months ,thinking shorter leaders with as little as possible drag,, = smaller hooks ??

what's ur thoughts

thx in advance

Tandem 2/0 Gamakatsu inside a needlefish squirt with either a glo squirt head
or a 1/2" piece of uv tubing as a spacer.
Deadly !

I like to use 6mm beads and tandem 4/0 red Gammys. Sometimes a single siwash w/a swivel if they keep taking the trailer.
I keep my leader fairly short 30" or less. More action that way or use an Abe & Al flasher for a real aggressive kick. If you are deep try UV Blast on the flasher.

Here is how I have been doing it. I like the single hook my self.

...was tying up some needle rigs tonight for the early april venture into Barkley I have planned. Was reviewing this and a few other threads related to leader lengths n whatnot...

couple unanswered questions (maybe I glanced over the answer lol) but,

why do you attach the hook to a swivel when running a hootchie? I don't see a swivel when rigged with a tandem hook set-up (where would there be room??) So why is it necessary, or opted, to attach one for a single hook rig?

Rigging using a 4/0 Gammy with beads, with the leader tied directly to the hook. Looks like a killer to me...

thoughts?

and while on the topic, its early season, I'm thinking a longer leader, creating a slower action is in order? 150ft down in chilly 'winter' waters, methinks a slow target is more presentable than a fast moving target? I've pre-tied 6 footers, thinking this is probably beyond the max I will be running...I assume I will be tugging them around once on the flasher at around 40-50"...

any fish out there care to comment?

IMO I have found livelier action souks better than slower and a little faster troll in winter. Instead of beers and swindle, I use a short piece of that UV tubing. I also had success using it in the trailer hook using bait.

FD, great hands on info...i figured the 2 years since you made this post was enough time for some R&D! Will have to try the shorter leaders on one side of the boat and see how it goes...

might be an area dependent thing ,dont know , C.S. likes longer leaders based on his post , ,tried that first ,
i also like his tandem 3/0 , , but ,
over time , 36in. leaders were more consistent " for me"... ( barkley )

( personally , i like smaller spoons better. modified Coho killers really grew on me this winter, needlefishy !!! )

FD - PM sent.. during the logger derby our most effect lure by far was TKO in black and glow 3.0 size i believe. 4 to 1. will have a few on hand for sure

The winters are active feeders trying to bulk up and get aggressive if you can find them, I think the short leaders would really get there attention with the action that would provide. That being said I always run a short leader 32" to 38" even into the summer when the biggies are more fussy and presentation is more important. I think the action just pisses them off sometimes and they smash it causing a hook up. The only tyees I have hit in vancouver have been on the short leaders. I always run the tandem set up but will try the single big hook this season.

Take note fellas

Excellent Post dmurph... right on the button , same with smaller spoons as well..
consistently hit larger fish with this setup , with early season fish through-out the sound..

note taken! both riggings still sound logical, but when searching for a rare bite to eat I could understand them choosing to use what energy they have to catch that meal...and SMASH IT!! looks like I could be splitting all the 6' leaders i tied into 32 and 38" lengths..the math works out with no waste so I'm happy lol. Still will keep a couple 6 footers for when I've run out of (your) ideas haha.

To the Misses disgust, more leader tying tonight!

really appreciate it fellas!
