My two cents, just real like crazy to get rid of any slack in the line, if he's there, he's there, no real need for extra setting of the hook. If you've missed it, you've missed it.
You don't need to set the hook on a fish that pops off the rigger when the line is buried in the clip. If it is a soft hit and the fish is just head shaking and not popping the pin...don't release it yourself...the hooks are likely not buried yet. Bring the rigger up, you'll only get about 10-15 ft and the fish won't like being dragged upwards and will trip it off the rigger...setting the hooks. Alternately hit the throttle increasing the tension that way...same result he won't like being pulled along and will trip it off.
Don't think you have to set the hook team here.
If the fish trips the clip by pulling on the hook I'm thinking the is already through. Try putting a hook with leader in the clip then pull on the hook and see the amount of force it takes to get it to trip, or better yet use a fish's mouth to see if the hook will or will not stick.
cheers

Definitely a pet peeve of my for those that do (assuming we're trolling)..........it's all about tension and cranking down to eliminate slack. If your fishing deep (off-shore) and your setting the hook.....TOO FUNNY. It's much better to spend your time cranking as fast as possible to tighten up as fast as possible. Of course this is assuming your hooks are needle sharp.............my two bits.
quote:One thing I do like to do if you have a fish pounding away and yes its hard to do but grab the rod out of the holder hit the downrigger switch and start reeling it wont take long but now your set!!!! the fish will pop it of but now you have changed the angle of every thing and there wont be any slack line out there and it feels pretty cool when it does pop off in your hands.
Same for me, I've had big fish pop the clip and smoke off 300" of line stop and be gone , figure the hook is probably in the skin, when they slow down I keep that rod bent hard and set hard, a few times to get the point thru some bone.
I like to give the reel two clicks and then do a few heel clickers on the back deck to give the fish time to decide if he wants to feel the bait and test the brine quality[)] **** that grab it, and give her ****![]
