Looking for your guys input,looking for a 250 outboard and don't want a 4 stroke.Whats everyones opinions on optimax's and yamaha hpdi's?

I would stay away from both. The ones that seem to be holding up are the new Johnson/Evinrudes. I prefer the Yamaha 2 strokes, but the older carbed engines. That is what I still run and I won't change to a 4 stroke either.

go etec! great motors with a good reputation. do some searches online. optimax also good but not as "advanced" as the etec and louder.

if you want to check them out or go for a ride with some 200's give me a shout.

Too true! The evinrude etecs have a much better warranty as well. The newer optis are great , but are loud and don't seem to live much after 1200 hours. Etecs seem to be having a 2500 hour life. Run away from HPDIs Yamaha. Not a well thought out 2 stroke and don't hold up in the salt. As much as ProFisher loves his carbed Yamaha Ox , be prepared for double or triple the fuel bill on higher rpm runs than Direct injection 2 strokes or 4 strokes.

Sorry but i have 2 boats with Optis and we are getting 2300 plus hrs on every motor with one that went almost 3000

Don't be sorry about that. That is what comes from proper maintenance and a good set up. Any good set up with proper maintenance and operation will last. Neglect is the biggest killer of any motor.

I have a 225 optimax and it has been great, but i know what its like looking for good used power i am shopping for a 225 etec and have had little luck so far.

Thanks chris, the only problem I see is that verados are expensive to rig, need their own specialized steering system. 225 opti's are everywhere but I'm pretty sure I need a 250

I saw it but I want to make sure I have enough ponies to push the boat with 4-5 people, gear, full tank of gas.. don't think a 225 will do it

Beemer my 97 Yami 200 2 stroke (not an OX) burns less than 10 gallons an hour on long runs, cruising at 30mph. Thats turning 4200-4300 rpms. I have run twice from Sooke to Bamfiled in a little over 3 hrs and burned exactly 28 gallons both times. Tank was full to the vent when I left and immediately pulled into Kingfisher's on arrival and filled to the vent. I've been very happy with my economy all these years.

Wow , that is exceptional performance profisher , It's no wonder you are happy with it. It goes to show that the setup and maintenance is just as important as the motor.
