Navionics HD

Does anyone have any experience with the Navionics HD Android app? Thinking of downloading it on my Asus Transformer Prime tablet but the $50 price is giving me pause. If they had a Westcoast Canada version for $10-20 it would already be downloaded but ya gotta shell out for all of US & Canada.
Thanks,
GT

Never the HD, but I've seen the non HD version....pretty sweet. Anyone know the difference between the HD and the regular? I'm getting iPhone 5 in 3 days so am gonna d/l one of them

I have the Navionics app on both my Android phone and an iPad. On the phone, I bought earlier and have a version that was (I believe) call British Columbia for the maps. It turns out that version has maps that run from about half way up Oregon to well into Alaska. So for me it was perfect in that if covered WA and BC. On the iPad, I have the US/Canada maps. I think when I bought, it was around $30. Both apps work the same in all regards, it's just a difference in the display. The only thing I don't like is that (at present) you can't have the map oriented to course or heading up. E.g. it's always North-up. Other than that, they're great apps and the total cost for the app is way less than a new map chip for most chart plotters. In fact the total cost for an iPad + the app is less than the total cost for 2-3 map chips on most plotters. It's really changing the business model for mapping back to what it should be - e.g. the manufacturers should make their money off of good software and hardware and not re-selling/repackaging map data that our governments created with our tax $'s.

For what its worth, HD is not available for iPhone 4S rather only the iPad. Not sure about the 5 though...... Overall a good back up but I wouldn't want to rely on it 100% of the time.

On a large screen (e.g. iPad or other tablet) with a good GPS (like the iPad, haven't tried other tablets), the software and positional accuracy has been just as good in my hands as any other chart plotter. E.g. if all I wanted was a chart plotter, I'd strongly consider an iPad+Navionics as the primary navigation system. With a 12V charger, it runs forever and if you lose power from the boat's batteries, it runs for many hours on the internal battery. So while I wouldn't want to rely on the phone version on a small screen 100% of the time, on a larger screen, I see no reason not to rely on it (as much as one can rely on any other chart plotter).

Seadna,

Try running in Sooke Soup in Aug with it vs. a decent chartplotter and hold a slow course (without a compass or shoreline as a guide) and you will see what I mean. If it works for you, great, but hasn't been overly accurate IMO to the point where I would use it exclusively.

hd and non are the same charts. hd just looks a little better on the larger ipad screen.
I use it on my ipad and it works well, however the chart detail around renfrew sucks!

Ah, yes! Using the Googler on my laptop I see there is a non-HD version for $15.50. Sold!

When I looked it up on Google Play on the tablet yesterday it only showed the HD version at $51.70 and so I thought that was the only available current version of the app. Your comments made me hunt deeper.

Thanks for the help!

I currently run a pirate copy of Garmin Bluechart for my area on my little Garmin 76cx, but would like to try out the nice big (relatively) display and touch screen of my tablet. The GPS seemed ok as a standalone (no cell capability and I turned the wireless georeferencing off) when playing with it in camp so I figured what the hey. With my mini HDMI to HDMI cord I can also pop it up on the 40" flat screen at home for BSing purposes / armwaving / planning. Hopefully the chart is half decent for the Courtenay to Campbell River Area, but for $15 I'm willing to try it out. As always, the paper copy comes with me along with my compass!

BTW, anyone hunting for a tablet should check out the Asus Transformer Prime! Fastest processor out there, Gorilla glass, Aluminum back, 8mp camera, True 16:9 aspect ratio (not like the Ipad) and an available querty keyboard dock which brings the battery life to something goofy like 17hrs. Way more quality fealing than all the others I tried. Go for the Ipad if you want to talk to your Apple tv, Iphone, Ipod but if you're looking for an Android critter it's pretty sweet. It's one of the few that has the "Ice cream sandwich" OS (most are the older "Honeycomb"). What a friggin' name for an OS!! My only complaint is the one I have (earliest release) doesn't have great WIFI range which is thought to be because of it's aluminium back. The GPS also had problems initially but the 1st or 2nd OS update cured it. Stay away from the Blackberry play book: smaller, very few decent apps and seemingly no commitment to it by Blackberry. Might be usefull in business with how it links to your blackberry but otherwise the people I know who have them regret the purchase, even at the sale prices. Just thought I'd throw this in as in searching the forum for Navionics info I found a few threads asking about tablets!

Thanks,
GT

So, in looking at it closer, the regular one is written for a phone and lists only phones and their OS's as compatable, and the HD one is written for tablets. That's why looking on Google play from my tablet only gave me the HD version as an option and likely why the Iphone doesn't have the HD version as an option.

So now I'm not sure that the non-hd would work on my Tablet, if I could download it onto my tablet (through the browser, not Google play) and if it would look like crap or not. Any ideas? Sent them an email...

Guessing I probably gotta get the HD version.

As a Hardcore Android Guy..... If you get it on your phone.... the same licence key will work on your tablet since it should be linked with your gmail account. My bet is both will work. I have not yet downloaded as I never spend money.... but definitely has my interest peeked.

As a hard core spelling guy, I think your interest is piqued.

That's just how hard core an Android guy he is. Grammar be damned. Be thankful it's English and not textology! Or even programming language...

It was actually a spelling error, not a grammar error.

Thanks, that's helped my understanding of Navionics immensely!

I have both the regular and HD as I have both the iphone and ipad. The standard works on both, the hd only on the ipad. Both similar. the hd has a few extras. One thing to note is if you downloaded your maps over 6 months ago. you should reload them. The maps covering the west coast have been improved in some areas. The same as if you bought a lowrance card last winter, use your free update period of one year to get it updated.

I've run my iPad with Navionics on it for about 2 years now. From Blaine to Princess Louisa inlet on the east side of VCI and from Tofino south to about La Push WA on the west and south side of VCI. Always side-by-side with my Lowrance HDS-8. I've never seen a deviation in position between the two and I've run in fog plenty. So again, I'll restate that I wouldn't be concerned about using the iPad as a primary navigation device. However, the maps on one unit or another may be better in some areas so I can't comment specifically on Sooke or Sooke in the fog. I can say that in the fog, I often like using my iPad for navigation and splitting the HDS-8 screen between radar and depth finder (if fishing) or just displaying radar full screen on the HDS8 if not fishing. I also will often use the iPad zoomed out relative to the HDS8. This allows me to use one device for close in viewing to keep me away from rocks etc. and another device to make sure that I'm taking the best route to get to a place that's a good ways away. You'd be hard pressed to find a chart plotter with a similar sized screen for less than twice the price of the iPad + the full up N. america mapping software. However, the iPad screen isn't at bright (hard to use on a sunny day outside of an enclosed cabin) and it's not designed for exposure to water and salt (like most marine grade chart plotters). On the other hand, the iPad lets you do many things you can't do with most chart plotters - internet access to check weather, swells and terrafin.com. Music either internal to the unit or streamed from the net, videos, games etc.

Perfect!
Thanks for all the good info (related to the topic) folks. I'll have to do some Google Play shopping now.
GT.

I doubt that, but it did pique your interest!

So now that (geo-tonz) has found what he's looking for. Saxe Point..... what "point" besides the notification of a spelling error from a grammar stand point would you like to contribute?

Let me guess? You own an apple product, & being trapped with close minded individuals has left you with the need to feel important by jacking internet forums & correcting spelling mistakes! Good to know our spelling & grammar are being critiqued out there for those like myself who so obviously need it:rolleyes:

You've got to relax my friend. It was a spelling mistake... Get over it. Don't take things so personally.
