Set a reminder in your phone to update your SD card in 51 weeks from now. So you'll get the newest update before your subscription ends, then wait a year to renew again. I don't renew every year.

I thought the sd card updates were different and more costly than the app? I know someone hacked the sd card for about $20 so you could split that cost if you go down the card update route.
