I was wondering if you guys can help me. I wanted to go down and grab some oysters on vancouver island and i hear nanoose bay has some. However, i have no idea which part of nanoose bay. I don't even know where i can park and have beach access. Can anyone help me with maybe a coordinate or something? A pm or something would be greatly appreciated. Just want to take the kids down there to dig for some clams and have some fun. Doesn't even matter if there are very few of anything.

I have not gone to that area for several years, but you can dig for clams a couple of kilometers before entering Nanoose Bay coming from Nanaimo. Just park at the right side of the highway, just across the "rest area" and cross the railroad tracks. Make sure the area is not closed for sewage or red tide contamination. If it is, you should see the signs before reaching the beach.

You MIGHT be all right-- but as El P said check out the latest PSP (red tide) and sewage contamination at the DFO office in Nanaimo.

What I found on the web for area 17 (Nanoose-Nanaimo) is this:

Area 17 Subareas 17-1 closed to all bivalve shellfish; Subarea 17-20 closed to butter clams only;Balance of Area 17 closed to butter clams and scallops only.

I dont know which sub area Nanoose is in. Anyone? However, you will have to know your species so you dont get the wrong ones. As far as oysters-- not the greatest time (spawning) to harvest them anyway even if they are open.

Pdbob, the rest area is located in the Island highway, about 2 km before entering Nanoose Bay when driving from Nanaimo. Across the rest area you can park at the side of the highway. The approximate coordinates are 49º,15.2'N and 124º, 10.25' W.

If you are going to dig clams near the rest stop, becarefull as the northern area is a clam farm. When facing the water from the rest stop, dig on the beaches to the right. Better yet go down the hyway and turn right on the road accross from the arlington hotel and follow it to the beach, better clams there and easy access and parking.
