Well i guess i dont have to worry about them prawntraps anymore..Guess i pulled a rookie move and set to close to the commie grounds..my two swedish prawntraps are pinned to the ground / and or entangled in a commie string in front of five fingers...FML... had about 200 feet of my 600 foot shot up a noticed alot of flex on my brutus +40, i tried several times to un tangle it but im sure its caught on the commercial line blew 3 30amp fuse trying to retrieve it, i left the hole shootmatch there in the freak possibility that Commercial prawn boat will have mercey and pull it in with there string and give me a call... but i fudgijng doubt it..

most likely they will cut it off their gear and re-tie It for you tomorrow. lesson learned I guess? don't set anywhere near commercial gear if you want to avoid this. or just fish your prawns the other 10 months of the year.....

Yup it was only my second time ..things went better the first time,All i can hope is they will cut and retie..hell take prawns even... going to go back out first thing and check...

try early afternoon if possible that way by then he will have most likely pulled that string and moved it a bit. good luck.

For all i know it could be hung up on the ledge and not entangled with the line only time will tell old Brutus really got a work out today.. If i cant get it up to surface tomorrow i will have to pull as much as i can and cut it off, least i will get some line and my scotchmen back..,.. LESSON LEARNED..:(

odds are if your in between his Scotsmans, your caught on his groundline. if it ends up that its just snagged on the bottom just tie it off to a clete and drive way from it that way the trap might rip off whatever its snagged on or the bridal might break, at least all your groundline and one trap will come up. better option than just cutting it.

Ya but it is 5/16 sealine, probably rip the cleat right my fugly boat,,i tried a little with the kicker cause it has a propgaurd, didnt want to try with the 75 cause my luck i would have had it in the prop... Guess i shouldn't have been tryin to be the one man prawning operation..

If you are set near commercial traps then you will just have to wait and hope they cut your line, clear and retie.

If you are stuck on something on the bottom - pull the line until you get slack up but not too tight, drive away till tighter then start circling. If one way doesn't work let go and try the other way. I've got traps up many times.
Trick is patients and not pulling too tight.

If that doesn't work... Curse on the Internet. Lol

Good luck

Thanks High Five, .. Hope to get them back , going to try tomorrow fingers crossed..

If you have a lot value in your gear and the time, I would be tempted to go out earlier and spend the day fishing for salmon in the general area and wait for them to turn up. Then apologize for getting your traps into their gear and that you would appreciate getting them back and then wait around.

Few years back I had a commie set over my gear Down at tent island, I ran over too his boat and asked him politely to go and pull his traps off of mine and the 20 other traps he dropped across to **** every one off. He told me they weren't his traps and to go talk to the other boats in the area, a polite F off to me, I told him he wouldn't care if I went and cut there mains and scotchman free if they were the competition. It's amazing how quickly they will go and pull there gear with yours attached and give it back to you. They run 20 pd cannon balls every 5 traps so when they pull there gear it picks up anything else with it. Most of the time it is a sporty against a commie and they will set across just to screw you but if you are there when they are they will give you your gear back especially if it will cost them gear or money. Hit the government dock in the morning and see how many boats are there and then head out and hang by your gear. Ask politely and you will probably get it back if it is tangled in there gear. Good luck. Maybe see you out there tomorrow afternoon.

Bad news if you are caught on him but as chevy said you could be on bottom. This is not uncommon-if you are to continue to prawn you need to find a place to tie off on your boat and pull the gear to deeper water. I have a much bigger puller than a brutus and I sometimes have to cleat up and pull my gear free.

Thanks.. ya was right there fishing for salmon, after i set it out, was by myself which made it tough, my kicker couldn't puller free , Going back, tomorrow with with another set of hands scotchmen is marked with my name and number , Hope for the best...:D

Bummer dude, live and learn I suppose. I hope you get your gear back or thems gonna be some expensive prawns once you replace it all.

congrats you win worst post of the day.

1. if you had asked me to kindly pull my 50 traps and 3600 feet of groundline to free up your 2 little sport traps id have told you to **** off too and maybe not so politely.
2. you think we set our gear in a spot because we want to "screw" sport fishermen? get a grip. were out there trying to make a living, and if that means setting gear in an area with sport gear because it will increase production, so be it.
3. threatening to cut scotchmans off commercial gear?!?! enjoy that massssive fine and whatever other reprocussions that come along with that if you actually go through with it.
4. who's got more to lose here? the boat owner that has hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in licenses and gear, or some twat with 2 Cambodian tire plastic plunderers that should have fished his prawns in april?

my best advice for someone wanting to sport fish for prawns during the commercial season, either just don't, or if you must, get some information on how the commercial prawn fishery works, especially get to know how a commercial string is set up, 9/10 sport guys have no clue and that's what leads to these issues. captains are constantly moving their gear around, especially on a slow year like this one, so just because a spot is empty in the morning doesn't mean it will be in the afternoon after the gear gets shuffled around that's another important thing to keep in mind.

Just for the record i did leave all in place and would never cut Anyones scotchmen off.. If i get my gear back i will be lucky and i would not expect any Commercial Fisherman to return to his string to free my pots, unless he was ready too, im pretty sure they will be checking them soon if they haven't already...That being said hopefully calmer heads prevail because i have no one to be mad at but myself. And for the record none of my gear was purchased at crappytire :)

none of those comments were directed at you. I just got fired up when tidal chaos started talking about cutting commercial gear. also, a commercial boat can not simply return to his gear and haul it again, its illegal to haul more than once a day. not as simple as just picking up 5 or 10 of the traps either, the entire string has to be pulled, 3600 feet of groundline and 300+ feet of buoy line on each end. as for the 20 pound cannon balls every 5 traps, I have no idea where he gets that from. usually 1 weight (boom chain or cinder block, no one uses lead too expensive to lose) at each end and maybe 1 or 2 extra weights if the ground requires it.
