indeed... 'bout time!!!

Not me! We used to ski up there when it was affordable, now since they went high-end (fancy magic carpet etc) and priced Comox Valley locals out of the market I just can't afford nearly $200 for a day's skiing for the two of us any more. Used to go up and get a half day ticket green chair which was affordable and catered to those on a budget. That's gone and so have I!!!!

Do you think Mt Washington makes huge money? Do you think their min. wage employees should work for less? Do you have any idea what it costs to stay open and give the consumer what they want. Maybe you want to go back to building your on skies knitting your own winter socks and start walking up the hill like it was done years ago. Try driving to Mt Cain and riding to Tbars all day maybe that more to your liking.

Stay out of the bar and pack you own lunch and catch a ride up the hill like so many others if cost is an issue. I know I can go up and ski about a half a day for free if I wanted to any day of the week but that would be theft.

Sure hope this late season doesn't hurt the mountain and the employees to much.

Good to hear the mountain is open.
I have a buddy in Comox that is probably chomping at the bit.
Our ski hill Sunpeaks has been awesome this year compared to most.
Powder this last week was amazing.
Thursday was as close to Heli skiing you can do without flying.
Unfortunately next week looks lke it will be a big melt everywhere.
Hoe it doesn't come true

Gallows certainly has a point - but what can you do when you have one option on the island?

a seasons pass at washington is $975 - a seasons pass at Big White (way better terrain and snow by the way) is $675... that is rediculous.

a day at whistler with an edge card is $77, a day at washington is $75+ - again... a bit rediculous for what you get!

there is no competition and it shows in the pricing - monopoly big time on the island!

There are two options on the island.... Let's not forget Mt Cain.

So let me get this right....

Catch a ferry and drive to Whistler get an edge card and get a $77 day of skiing with your preloaded card or pay $109 ticket window cost. Or catch a ferry drive to Big White buy a pass. Hmmmm ain't going to happen. Remember Mt Washington doesn't have a ridership of 2.8 million per year so to have the equipment and terrain the they have and to keep growing and offering what consumers want they need to charge the user. Pretty simple to understand and put up to have such a awesome hill so close to home.

Whistler $109
Big White $79
Mt Washington $75

Most years a seasons pass makes a lot of sense if you ski a lot-or the weekday seasons pass for the retired was a good deal as well. When I skied Mt Washington (before I became a winter Vagabond) I always got a pass-paid off in every year but one and in that year they gave us the next year free. Day passes are expensive wherever you go-fact of life I'm afraid and Mt Washington is a pretty decent facility.

Glad to hear the mountains have rec'd a good sized dump-this is a pic of the weekend lineup @ Whistler-talk about crowded!

Can't wait to get the season going!

For those complaining about cost, comparing to the interior and comparing to the past...
Costs of everything go up, we were not in the interior and there is far more terrain, better lifts, better road, better and more of everything.

Tough business to run here on the island I imagine. They are all staffed up and insured but haven't been able to open. They are losing money daily without snow. I remember the year they put in new lifts and then couldn't open that season. I bet that took a couple years to catch up.

Bring on the snow! (On the hill... Not here)

yes its true - not overly feasible to get off the island and ski at other areas with the associated costs. My point was purely coming from a quality of skiing terrain to price ratio - which IMO, i think the local hill is a bit steep on the pricing.

At the end of the day however, I live on this island and am happy to have Washington there - it does the job for an Island hill.

You could not pay me enough to stand in a line like this just to make a few turns in that coastal concrete they call snow.
I grew up skiing Whistler and they can have it.
I can get 20 runs in a day and never wait more than 5 minutes if at all in a lift line.
Sorry just sayin.

I wish they would bring back the half day green chair pass which was "affordable" for locals on a budget. It would actually generate more money for the mountain instead of driving business away. Seems they don't want to do that!

You can buy a 1/2 day pass.
You can also get a cheap night ski pass.
or Easy Acres beginner day pass $38.00 or night pass (3:30- 9:00) $12.00
Check out the website.

Full day passes are 1/2 price all week this week.

Lots of good deals still to be had for locals there Gallows.

I don't expect this opening to last unfortunately. It's already melting and the 2 week forecast is basically sunny and warm. The foreign workers will have to leave the country soon enough so wouldn't surprise to hear them cancel the season within a couple weeks (and trust me, thats not what I want, but just my realistic thoughts).

Was up there today for a few runs and was sure nice to finally have a chance to ski. I'll be surprised if they are open on the weekend though, the melt is on for sure. Was +6 degrees in the parking lot on the way home.

Wow!!! That line up is insane! No lineups at Manning park and great snow! Think I will keep going there!

Even Manning looks "barely" open. I don't ski or snowboard anymore so it doesn't bother me. What does bother me is the watersheds, and I sure hope we get some heavy deep snow in the next little while or our rivers and fish could have a hard time this summer. Drinking water in a lot of communities could be effected as well. Major water restrictions coming if it doesn't dump soon!!!
