I wll be moving to Parksville this summer. I have a 16 foot boat that I have been running the Fraser river with. I plan on using it for the salt. I have absolutely no salt experience. Maybe some of you fine people can let me know the must haves to get me going. I plan on buying 2 electric Scotty's, prawn traps, crab traps now for gear some mooching rods, mooching reels and than whatever terminal tackle is recommended.

Thanks in advance

There are lots of topics on this forum that you could search to get you going. Or, the next time you are in Nanaimo head down to Screamin Fish and Fly by the ferry. Rob and the boys can point you in the right direction.

Your river Salmon gear will do for downrigging for the moment just throw some #20 on the reels.

Used commercial gear is often your best bet for Crab/Prawn it lasts forever.

Given your shopping list I'm more than sure that Rob will be more than happy to see you walk in the front door and will help outfit you with everything you need :-)

As your going from river to salt maybe spend a little time going over your boats systems and safety gear as well as your tackle. 16' is as small as I like to go and not be too concerned about getting caught by weather on the ocean even when close to home. VHF radio/handheld? GPS/handheld? fog horn? bigger anchor with more chain and longer rope? if your going to be handpulling traps off-season a floater coat and a good reboarding system? bilge pump capacity upgrade or handpump as backup? bigger zincs? fuel line water separator(other than the tiny one on the outboard)? if your going to be running dual electric scotties and a trap puller a second battery or a good voltmeter? good lifejackets? etc. etc.

You may have thought of all of this already but it seemed like a good opening to highlight an area not discussed as much on the Board. Watched another 40' boat get towed into the travel lift yesterday with only the radar mast and the top couple of feet of the bridge visible... running in fog at night and met a non-liquid piece of realestate... missed hitting a solid rock wall with a 250' underwater drop by only a hundred feet... lucky to get the boat back at all...

Have a hoot when you move to Parksville, there is no end of fun to be had on the ocean, and nothing tastes as good as something you grow or catch yourself, but play safe as the ocean can be pretty unforgiving!!!

Pacific Net & Twine just outside Parksville had used commercial prawn traps on consignment last year, so maybe this year as well, or check out the Buy & Sell for local used commercial traps or the square metal mesh traps made by a couple guys in Nanoose which are quite popular.

I agree with SIR on the safety stuff....however if you're wanting to do some salmon fishing and prawning in the Parksville area...you can fish French Creek with a rowboat on a nice day. You don't need to go further than 1000 yds off shore, don't need a GPS (although they are handy). You will need downriggers (electrics would be good, the fish are deep), a fishfinder, and RPGs for the seals.
Check the Ballenas Island marine weather before heading out.

As suggested, do a search on this forum. Look for terms such as French Creek, Qualicum, Little Q, Sangster, Ballenas, Gerald, Mistaken, Schooner Cove........
Don't recommend Sangster in a small boat, and the Little Q is a long run from the French Creek launch.

Have fun...don't expect to catch many fish.

Hey bbronswyk, I work in Parksville and live in Nanoose Bay.I fish alot all year in the area and would be glad to point you in the right direction. I don't know if you are planning to moor your boat or trailer but there are tons of spots to fish with your 16 footer.

Thanks for making me feel welcome here. All advice is appreciated and welcome.

The safety stuff seems like the place to start as its probably the most important.

I'll have to take you up on your offer bigredsnapper.

One other question. How is the lingcod fishing in the area? I have looked at the closure areas and their seems to be alot of open spots around there.

Thanks

And welcome to the Dark Side, Bryan.
