Mooching 101

10 foot rod, main line to slip sinker of your desired weight, can use a permanent keel type if ya want, bead chain, 6 '1/2 foot leader material , bead chain, 2 1/2 foot to cut plug, fresh or brined, whole or strip herring, teaser head or just whole anchovy fresh or brined. If you brine your bait it will last longer and save ya $$. If your in a dingy, keep in mind you may not have a reach and need to shorten your leader.

using buzz bombs or perkins etc etc, can be a great deal of fun too, don't rule it out. Jerk fishin, Find some bait, fish a pool or fish both sides of tide changes to increase your odds

Good luck

Thanks, I am not clear on what 2.5 foot leader you are referring to. Is the bait 2.5 feet from the weight seems really close...

I think he means that the bead chain swivel can be 2 1/2 ft to the cut plug......but the weight needs to be further up the line about 6 1/2 ft.....to give you 6 1/2 ft from weight to cutplug...

Keel weights troll better than banana weights.....

Lots of guys like to rig those weights so they can get them off easy at the boat when they have a fish in close and need to wind in a bit further.......

The old style slip weights IMO never really worked well at this.......they were designed to be taken off easy.....but in my experience they never worked as advertised (except that they were always slipping when you didn't want them to).....so you ended up putting an extra twist in the line and then you had to bugger around dealing with that, which negated the whole idea)...

I ended up just using a keel or banana weight with a bead chain on each end of the weight and and a quick-change clip on the leader end of the weight....

then use a long leader on the lure and connect it to that.

I never took the weight off with a fish on........in the time it takes to get the weight off and messing around, the fish could have been in the boat with a little finesse net work.

Sometimes we used those Big Jon little plastic devices that hold a weight but trip when the fish hits........(they still make them).
