Christopher Vang was last seen on September 12th around 6:30pm, being swept away by the current in the Fraser River at Peg Leg, in Chilliwack, after heroically leaping to aid in the successful rescue of his 2 friends and fellow fishermen.

His family is looking forward to bring closure to this ordeal.

Sad, sad story to hear Scott.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, it is very much appreciated.

We are very aware of the grim reality of the situation, and the fact that he may not even be all in one piece.

The Fraser River is a beast, and as you all may be aware, the riverbed landscape changes every year, making it a whole new river to deal with. All we want to do is to bring what we can of him home.

We have a lot of support from all over the lower mainland, on land, air, and sea, from family/friends, RCMP, fishing/boating communities, and first nations reserves.

We tried our very best

I was there on that tragic day. It's so unfortunate that we had no safety equipment at all. There were no boats around, no one had a rope or even a whistle. All I could do was keep casting my line out in hopes that he could have something at all to grab on to. When he didn't, I'd retrieve, run down the bar and try again. To my left a man threw out a lifejacket that a child had been wearing to no avail.

After seeing his mom on TV, and hearing about her plea, I will always wear a PFD now, and I now bring a rope with a floatation device tied to its end for throwing.

Its a sight I hope never to see again but if I do I'll not be unprepared.

My sincerest condolences to the family and friends.

Christopher Has Been Recovered, Thank You For All Of Your Efforts

Christopher was recovered on Tuesday at around 7pm where the Vedder canal meets with the Fraser River, roughly 19km downstream from where he disappeared. A fisherman noticed him and pulled him ashore, then contacted Search and Rescue and RCMP. Our family was notified around midnight and we confirmed his identity the following morning.

This great community, and all of its' members that either took part in his rescue, search, or kept an eye out on the waters for Christopher, our family would like to thank each and every one of you.

Though there are many nameless faces that took part in this search, know that it was your support, thoughts, and prayers that helped us continue moving forward to a resolution.

The only thing we would ever ask of you now is to please keep in mind that there are important people in your lives that look forward to your return every day from the waters, and please continue to fish and boat responsibly. It never is just the bait, or even your own life that you put on the line.

Even though you didn't know Christopher, you and many others risked much to help him. We are extremely thankful and appreciative of your efforts. It was because of you and others that helped save my other 2 brothers from the same fate on that tragic day.

Although extremely saddened with our loss of Christopher, we are deeply grateful that we will not have 2 more funerals to prepare for.

Thank you for continuing to pursue safer initiatives when on the water.
