Mercruiser Trim for Alpha 1 Gen 1

Hi all .
I have an '84 Mercruiser 228 with an Alpha 1 Gen 1 drive. I suspect the trim rams are from an MC1 and are a tad too long. (I bought it this way. Two hydraulic line connections at the fore end of the cylinder).

The sterndrive, when in the completely down position, does not seat against the gimbal housing. It rests on the hydraulic rams.
When I drive, all the force is transferred through the rams to the boat. Always.
Because of this, the exhaust tube doesn't form a seal and the exhaust bubbles up around the gimbal housing instead of discharging through the propellor and the bow is perpetually trimmed "up".

Are the rams too long? Should the length of the rams be no more than the distance between the fore & aft mounting pins? Right now, the rams are are about 1/2" too long.
If I need to get different rams, any recommendations where to buy them?

Thanks for your time.

Now for a serious post, Lots of the marine mechanics have spare legs hanging around. Maybe phone around to some local guys near you and see if they have anything available that they can give you the correct rams.
