Merc trouble

Looking for advice on mechanical problem...

I have a Merc 1999 2 stroke outboard. It has a button at the bottom of the throttle that you push to leave it in neutral but give it some gas. The button is stuck in, so can't motor into gear. It isn't the button itself, as that's loose in its track -- whatever it pushes in is stuck.

Is that a stuck linkage cable?
Suggestions for how to fix it at the dock?
WD40 in somewhere?

Any ideas most appreciated...

Update to my own post...3 hours of fiddling around and fixed it for now. A little spring pushes the gizmo in and out of gear...spring is sticky, it doesn't work. Take off back plate, spray in some wd40 and good to go...all the time was spent trying to get access to the back plate...gotta be harry houdini it's all packed in there so tight.

Anyway, off to the derby in 5 hours. Good luck to all.

Yes the button disengages the shift linkage cable. The casing comes apart for installing the throttle and shift linkage cables.
I remember seeing a breakaway diagram of it once before online at a Mercury site. You might be able get some WD40 into the area around the button you may be able to free it up. i would do a quick online search for a diagram
