Mechanic recommendation vancouver

I think it’s time for an upgrade. It can even be some twins that are a little bit newer. It doesn’t have to cost $50,000

Just don’t dump $3000 into those things trying to fix them

I appreciate the recommendation @bryce

Can it be fixed? Yes.

Did those engines last 30 years? Yep

Do the marine mechanics that can fix that want to? Nope

Pump a few grand into that and there is no guarantee

Are merc outboards unbelievably frustrating? Yes. Parts are all special order on that vintage for the most part, except on the electronics parts that come from CDI now. Which you may as well source from them instead because they are pretty much making the oem stuff for that vintage anyway.

That second picture is the rectifier. It's basically solid state. Tough to say what the real problem is until you dig into that one.

Tell you what, if you wanna wait a year I'll get your name down on some zukis, I've got limited, very very limted etecs left and I can pump out tohatsu into the 140 range, unless you wait a year again for the higher HP.

I just had Mehrab at Ignition Marine do work on my Boston Whaler.
I live in Calgary and my boat was in Vancouver and I couldn't have asked for better service.
Excellent work, fantastic communication. Really tried and work hard to ensure I was completely happy.
He actually answered the phone when you called and if he missed your call, he called back right way.
Old school service!!!
I'd give him 10 out of 10!!!

Yes, I did not want to be too judgmental, but the pictures posted made me think major electrical fire. I m glad you got things fixed up, you can buy a lot of fuel for the costs of new outboards (assuming what you have is generally reliable). I am not super surprised that there are not a ton of shops enthusiastic to work on older outboards. Dealing with older stuff, particularly stuff exposed to salt water tends to often escalate into a big job once you start dealing with it, and people with old outboards don't generally have them because they are enthusiastic at spending a bunch of money. I like old 4x4s and jeeps, and even had several old british sportscars in the past. Your solution is usually the way you have to go with that kind of stuff, figure out how to fix it yourself.

Nice Rovers - I had a 1962 and a 1968 both series II 88s but that was over 20 years ago now. They used to be quite inexpensive (90s) if they were a bit rough, but my uncle had to pay 10k for the one he is restoring now and it was a pile of ugly parts (it was actually 2 to make 1 runner). I have an older jeep now, easier and cheaper for parts and a similar sort of experience. I don't fix people's mechanical junk for a living so I still enjoy tinkering with stuff, if its not at night, on the side of the road, in the rain or at -20C.

The old rover days sure where fun, and same as you that was 20 years ago 😆... my pops had a yard full.of them but I think my favorite was a 107 series 1 pickup.. an 88 diesel I fixed and sold off to Washington state.. saw it going down the road when I worked on port Mann... the old dormobile we use to go moose hunting with ... Makes me nostalgic for them, I would want one if I could justify it. My partner would say - you just spend thousands on a jeep engine rebuild! and she'd be right
I like the soft top, I never had one for my Rovers. It looks good on your 88.
