May trout

I'm a manitoba angler heading out to vancouver and okanagan areas in may and I was wondering if anybody could give me some info on which waters to go to. Mainly looking for kokanee, cutthroat n steelhead.

Around Vancouver Rice, Deer, Hayward, and Mill Lakes are stocked with trout that can be caught from shore. Way more options around Kelowna. If you’re willing to drive a bit, there are some fantastic trout lakes in the Merritt that will produce a ton of hookups if you can fish during the chironomid hatch. I don’t have much experience fishing around Kelowna, but maybe there are similar opportunities nearby.

Dee lake chain and beaver lake area all the way across the plateau to Hadoo Aberdeen Nickolin start on beaver lk rd out of lake county and enjoy there’s even hike in lakes
Echo lk is fun that time of year too
I’ve caught several nice Kokanee in Kal lk
Even a few in echo that I didn’t know were there

I lived on the ranch at the far end of echo lake for a number of years. There was some pretty nice Kokanee in there back then, still there but smaller now. Still catch the occasional 5-6lb rainbow. Was putting my gear In the tinner one day and when I stood up and turned around I saw a lake trout on the shallow side of the dock that was at least 20lbs.

Is echo lake close to Kenora?

Bringing a boat, float tube or? May is generally prime time, trout earlier in the month and Kokanee later.
No boat or nothing maybe a pair of waiters but that's about all. We don't have any kokanee here in manitoba so I'm really hoping to hook into one.

Steelhead: Steelhead season (vancouver area) peaks Jan-March. It's normal for local, knowledgable anglers to catch just a few fish a season... The nicknames "fish of a thousand casts" or "ghosts of the pacific" are earned. Would highly recomend if steelhead are on the bucket list to hire a local guide, and book a trip just for that.

Kokanee: Kokanee are land-locked sockeye salmon. They live in schools & feed mid water column on their primary food source - plankon. I'm sure the odd one gets caught from shore, but a boat is (basically) a requirement. Ideally with downriggers/lead core line, as they're often 30+' deep. There are lakes in the interior & vancouver area which have very healthy kokanee populations, but i'd recomend sourcing a boat.

Cutthroat/rainbow: Cutthroat opportunities would be limited. If you're looking for a retention fishery - rainbow would be your best bet. https://www.gofishbc.com/where-to-fish/ Check out this resource. It's awesome. Likely your best bet is to find a good stocked trout lake with a dock or If i were you I'd find a local "resort/Lodge" with cabins & boats for rent (kelowna area). May is prime-time for interior lake rainbow trout, and the local lodges/resorts have great knowledge for their lakes, along with all the tackle you'd need. Boat rentals tend to be fairly affordable as well.

there has been no stock released into Hay ward for many years however nearby Rolley and Whonnock do get stocked in the spring. Near Kelowna there are good lakes accessible from Highways 97C and 5A south of Merritt. Nicola Lake near Merritt has Kokanee and May should be good. Other small lakes such as Stake and Peterhope have been stocked with Kokanee.
