Live Herring for mooching

I have an uncle back east coming over to the Island later this month. He’s fished here many times in the past using live herring. I was wondering if it’s still possible to buy live herring near Campbell River. GLG

Hey GLG, good luck in your quest. If you should be so lucky as to find a source, kindly post the same here as I believe other members have made this same enquiry in the past as well. SS

Ah live herring. Good memories. Loved those bikini clad herring girls over on Quadra Island...

Teamchachi too funny. Yea I think the only way to get some is to find the bait and take them with a trout rod. Great if you have the time. GLG

Just heard that C.R. has them, not sure where exactly.

Let us know if you find out where, I'm here in CR and I don't know of anyone currently selling Live Herring. There is a sign for them on the main harbour but if you go in there and ask their "live" is actually frozen... Same diff, well almost...Yea right.

Yes used to use live herring and needlefish for coho off of Flora Islet and Tribune Bay /Norris Rock in the early '80's , used about 1/2 to 1 oz of weight and let 'er down what a blast !

Nope--Pedder Bay is out here in Metchosin, not in Pender harbour. We used to buy live herring in Pender Harbour when I was a kid but that was a long long time ago! As was mentioned, sure was fun--that rod tip would jiggle a bit with the herring trying to get away from the salmon--then kapow!

Used to drive me nuts pinchin all the barbs on all the tiny trebles but my guests loved it cause the line would hit the bottom and you'd have something be it a bottom fish or a salmon or a dogfish inside a minute - five at the most.

Pretty sure Painters used mostly live bait a few years ago when I lived there - could ask there to see if they still do or know of a contact or two!

Two years ago we went with painters and got live herring at a place on quadra. It was on the inside in discovery passage about halfway down.

We also used to rake herring around Chrome Island at s. end of Denman/Hornby and at Norris Rocks. While much of this area is now closed (from headland to headland all the way out to Flora) it is still possible to jig for live herring just offshore if you see them rising or are lucky enough to spot gulls feeding on a herring ball. (I try fishing the ball first for salmon and if no luck then I jig for bait).

I keep a small herring jig in my tackle box and it often comes in handy!

Those asking the Painter's guides, we haven't had access to live herring in awhile now. Every now and again Charlie (on Quadra - same guy that employed the bikinni girls) brought some in for the odd occasion. But he went under not so long ago and unless anyone has heard otherwise no bait from Charlie's in some time now. Sorry bout that.
