Live bait

Just wondering how effective live bait is on lingcod in Nanaimo I would also like to know what kind of bait fish . I know dead herring works well.

Use lures !
No sense in killing/wasting rockfish or other live fish you could put on your table to catch a lingcod...what a waste !
I know it works but I'll never understand it.....
If you can only catch lingcod on live fish then you need to work on your angling skills big time !!!
Big lures = big fish, lol.

If you have a minute to kill at the dock before heading out you can jig up a few shiners and chuck them in a bucket of water. I have caught lingcod and snapper on live shiners lots of times, they're not as good as live herring but they do well. Did this today actually.

If you are going to use live bait and barbless hooks for salmon a thing that really helps the hook stay in is magic thread. The elastic thread used to tie bait sacks for river fishing. I also use it to keep bait on hooks well for Sturgeon fishing. Same with fishing for Lings etc.
For the Herring you only have to put it on lightly so the fish still can swim around.

Do you just wrap the hook? Or some other fancy connection?

Magic Thread is really tough and it binds to itself. All you really have to do is put a couple wraps around the shank of the hook then two (not tight) wraps around the live fish's belly and back to the hook. To finish it off you can just do a half hitch or whatever you want on the hook then cut off.

For other non live baits while ocean bottom fishing or Sturgeon fishing I wrap the bait multiple times then back up and onto the hook. This keeps the bottom fish from sucking off baits without also getting the hook. Works very well.
