Little Qualicum - None retention of all species of salmon until further notice

Folks,

The hatchery was hopeful to have a retention fishery for Chinook on the Little Qualicum river tomorrow but the assessment was below expectations. They have 90% of their required brood stock but there are not sufficient numbers of chinook holding in the down stream pools.

The hatchery staff will continue their assessment but until further notice the retention of Chinook, coho, chum and pinks in the Little Qualicum River will be zero. Here is my public notice.

Closures:

Closed to all fishing from the hatchery fence down stream to the signs approximately 35M below the hatchery fence.

No fishing from the Falls in the Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park Dec 1 to May 3.

All tributaries below the falls in the Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park

Fly Fishing Only:

September 1 to November 30(Where open) all of Little Qualicum River including the tributaries above the falls in the Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park.

Possession Limits.

Non-retention of Wild Trout and Char.

Chinook:
Effective immediately the retention of Chinook in the Little Qualicum River is zero (0) until further notice. Returns are below required escapement. Chinook returns will be monitored and should the level of returns improve then angling opportunities will be reassessed.

Chum:
Effective immediately the retention of Chum in the Little Qualicum River is zero (0) until further notice. Returns are below required escapement. Chum returns will be monitored and should the level of returns improve then angling opportunities will be reassessed.

Coho:
Effective immediately the retention of coho in the Little Qualicum River is zero (0) until further notice. Returns are below required escampent. Coho returns will be monitored and should the level of returns improve then angling opportunities will be reassessed.
