Speaking of man’s best friend…
I’m camped out on the lower Skeena waiting to catch a ferry to Haida Gwaii and found this hat in the bushes…
Maybe you guys already knew about the Tahltan bear dog but i had never heard of the breed
Small, the size of a terrier, but fierce and brave with a crazy bark that sounded like a yoedel that confused bears and held them at bay until the hunters arrived. Also porcupines and ptarmigan and other small game
This was before firearms and snow mobiles
A Tahltan women put that dog’s qualities into perspective pretty bluntly :
“…If you owned a Tahltan bear dog you ate. If you didn’t… you starved…”
