Leader lenght for 5" Tomics??

Kinda funny then. A dozen plugs I bought direct from Tomic in 2 of my favorite go to colours a few years ago have all caught many nice Chinooks 20 pounds or above....must be a horrendous fluke....wish I could fluke out and win Lottomax instead....Thanks Holmes and Catherine....and Wayne Moss as well...because every one of these plugs has caught many fish. Must be some kinda voo doo science making these plugs catch fish.

I am sure Iron Noggin' and the trollers on here are experts on this and this little debate comes up from time to time...and I'm not denying that there are killers in the batch....but if most of the fish are being taken from 10 to 15 fathoms, then it's obvious that the 5 fathom and 20 fathom plugs aren't going to be as productive.

I'll gladly pay postage for lots of plugs which are next to new and allegedly do not catch fish.

PM me and we'll set up payment.

Hmmm....I think I am going to have to go back and look through the pile again. I was trying to avoid the 'well used' ones.....but maybe those are the winners.

Anyways, I came across this video.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEHPn3Em5MU
Puget Sound is pretty close to Victoria...so i reckon this is going to work great. I got a few of this exact one(in GLOW).

Any thoughts on removing the anchors and running the line through? I am going to try on a couple.

Don't pull the pins. Once you do, there is no going back. Use 25-40 pound test leader and you should be fine. If you break the fish off and lose the plug, you have only yourself to blame. Lodges cut plug with 25 pound test all day long and don't break off a ton of fish.

Us guides pull the pins because novice anglers sometimes break off "killer" top producing plugs which, as earlier stated in this thread, can be extremely annoying. However, plugs aren't "cheap" so getting one back makes a difference on the bottom line.

I've been repainting some 50 cent plugs, pulling pins, and putting spots and 3d eyes and clear coats on 'em. I check for lacy fabrics for scale backs while my wife is shopping at Fabricland. It's a fun way to pass some time in the winter. I don' know if they will catch fish, but most of my $13.00 ones do. And my half price ones from Nikka or PNT bargain bins do as well. Plugs are fun because if there are lots of fish you will catch them and it's just you and the fish. If there are not a lot of fish you can blitz around at 4-5 mph until you find some and then go back to your bait or favourite spoon if you are desperate to fill the freezer. I read some where that teeth marks on the tail are from bombers and other scrap fish; a big spring will grab it farther up.

Yep, all the used gear we see out there should NEVER be invested in....all the new gear that came off the water when all those licenses were retired....useless...sigh.

Let's just accuse all the plug manufacturers of ripping us all off.. NOT!

I'll gladly take those plugs at that price because I know they'll catch fish...

Guess every lure in your arsenal is hacked and shaved to barely recognizable because they're all razor HOT.

Anyways, not every lure has to outfish it's clone by 2 or 3 to 1.

If i got one or two plugs out of a box that worked i was happy , I used a very large hook for action and also that way the hook would not get hung up on the plug itself.
If you come buy False Creek fishermens dock i can get you a tote box full of plugs (that did not work) for a great price , also a bridge for sale.
however , if you find a used plug with score scratches on the leading front face , that was common for guys to use the hook to scratch how many fish a plug would catch.
buy that plug !!!

back for more!

So, I did go back and looked through the pile again. I am a big believer in glow, so I took the whole box into the dark and pretty easily pulled out the 30 glow plugs from the pile of hundreds. I ended up picking them up for $30 for all 30. To my pleasant surprise, about half of them have an X marked on the nose with the hook(and lots of teeth marks!)!! Good sign! I looked through the non glow pile that was left and couldn't find too many at all with X's, so i decided to just stick with the glow.

I am pretty well stocked for many years to come. Got over 40! Some new, some proven producers....hopefully they do the same for me!

In the end I came away with:

51 Metallic Gold top, silver bottom, bloody eye X 1
84 Metallic silver with green and black scale back X 1
94 White Glow w Black, purple and gold on top X 7
304 White Glow w bronze back and black stripe X 1
600 White Glow X 12
601 White Glow w army green back and black stripe X 1
602 While Glow, pick head with light rainbow paint X 4
??? Metallic peach glow X 10
900AC Chrome X 1
Pink, yellow, green tape inside X 1
Yozuri Yo Plug?? X 1
Broken Back Plugs - 1 new 1 well used!

Holy **** AP. You buying a commercial boat soon too? One of those plugs has my name on it!

You have enough plugs to try the pulled pin at least. That vid you posted was a bit of BS. That same info can be pulled from Tomics own site. The nice thing about having the pin in is being able to change the action on your gear. I've caught huge Cutty's on 4's though and I usually pull the pin to get my gear back from fishing in close to shore. I've got a few favs I'm going to use for a SVI pink run and more than a few I wouldn't mind targeting Springs with. Maybe I'll take all the shakers for the guides....

I have milk crates full of plugs if anybody wants to buy some......cheap

So, I finally got out to test out these plugs>>> my report in Victoria thread>>

"I went out to Constance Bank this morning for a couple of hours to trying out some 5" Tomic plugs (glow!)that I picked up. I was a bit skeptical about how they would work for winter springs, but they seemed to work just fine. Had 3 salmon to the boat in an hour and a half out there. I took a sharpie marker to one of the plugs to do a bit of dotted back. It got 2 of 3 salmon. The other one was straight glow. It was a relatively good fight with no flasher and just straight plug off the downrigger. Let go a few cod also. I took one 7-8lb home and a good size dungee from the crab trap(and a handful of undersized males).

All in all a good couple hours on the water. There were some harbour porposes foraging on the bank. Inside the stomach of the salmon was a 4" herring and a squid. "

I think your first response to you inquiry by f_m was pretty close. I've always used Frank Mahovlich as a rule. His jersey number was 27, so I give it 27 pulls, which probably equals about 40 feet. Works for me.;) eman
