For years I tolerated the yellow lawn. Cut the lawn long & hide the Pacific north west plague
This year I had a plan, I do not know if shez a good one but @ least it is a way to kill the spinney fish bone like plant!!!

My plan iz 2 moss kill & turn um black & let them dry for a bit then power rake( rented @ home Cheepo )
That plan was flawed due to R ever changing, rain off rain on season!!

2day gave me a break in the power raking............what a tough chore that was , 10 bags @ the front & mayB double in the back of accumulated moss, ran out of bags so the back lawn moss was plied into a mountain @ the corner

My next plan iz to airrate, then spead soil & re-seed, then water in hopes to germinate B4 the dry season

My ??? iz is any better way in controlling moss in our wet climate

drainage, sand, low light seed, next year, triple airate sand soil seed,, lawn forever..

Remove grass and paint ground green or artificial turf.

Gasoline, a match and asphalt. works every time very low maintenance, occaisional sweep and a once a year power wash :D

If your lawn is in perpetual shade -it is a never ending fight which I doubt you could win. Come over to the Darkside-GIVE -UP and GO Fishing

And as for adding lime, if that really worked then moss would never grow on concrete.

Well you are off to a good start, which is getting rid of it. Use an Iron based product, kill it and power rake till its gone. Big job yes, but the only way.

Next lime it. 12.5lbs per 1000 sq feet. The moisture we have washes away alot of important micro nutrients in the soil causing acidic soil. Moss loves it. It wont remove the moss thats there, and really wont completely prevent it int he future, however it will make the growing conditions less favourable for it.

Next aerate it and over seed it. Recommended rate is 4lbs per 1000 sq feet. DO NOT by cheap seed, you will get cheap results. Once its seeded, lay 1/2 inch of soil over the new seeded areas where its the most sparse. THEN WATER!!! Seed can take up to 30 days to fully germinate. You need to keep the seeded areas most for at least 3 weeks. That means everyday for 20mins or so. If seed gets wet then dries out it dies. If the seedling stats to grow then dries out its root system isnt strong enough to with stand it and it will die. Making all your hardwork fruitless. The #1 reason why people struggle with seeding, is there committemnt to watering. I hear all the time ( well it has been raining alot. Thats not enough. EVERYDAY or dont bother.

Once the lawn is established. Keep it healthy by doing a fertilization program. 4 times per year min. Its important your lawn is fed all the time. Most home owners feed there lawn one in the spring and maybe once in the fall. This wont keep moss out fo your lawn, because you lawn will never be thick enough to out compete the moss for space. ITs like saying if i eat a big breakfast on monday i dont have to eat the rest rest of the week. The key to having a nice lawn with minimal moss, weeds, etc is to have it as thick as possible.

Keep your lawn 3inches tall. Never cut more the a third of the grass blade and promote a deep root system. Keep your lawn watered with a minimum of 1 inch per week through out the year.

Do those things and you future moss problems will be pretty minimal.

Actually, what I did was to spray my lawn a couple times until all the moss turned black. Then I put a dethatch bar on my mower and took all the moss and thatch off. I then raked that off. I then set my mower on a low setting and cut grass and picked up what thatch was left, Fertalized grass and now sit back and enjoy my all green grass. There are a few spots w/o grass but they are coming in fine and it will be 100% in another couple of weeks.

Used to pack my creel with moss kept the fish fresh. Pack your cooler with moss and some ice, you will have a constant supply.

Why, cut your grass? or wash your car? or brush your teeth? etc....lol...

careful using those dethaching blades on your lawn mower they can really stress your mower, rent a machine it does a way better job, you wont believe how much moss and grass comes out of you lawn... Its a pretty big job and usually you've got to stay on top of it each year to keep the moss in check...
