Kyuquot Area

Thinking about fishing Kyuquot next season. Would boat up from Gold River.
Is there anywhere to stay and is there fuel in the area?

Any recommendations about the area would be well appreciated.

Thanks!

It can be hit or miss with the salmon, but if it's slow, head off shore to the dropoff.

The bottom fishing is quickly declining, thanks to guides helping their clients get their limits filled of all species. Nothing like seeing a guide boat with four jiggers hauling out old rockfish one after another.

If you want to do well in this area just head to the farthest locations away from Kyuquot.

I've had good salmon fishing in July and early August. Late Aug I usually go for Barkley.

It's a neat area though, worth checking out if you don't mind the slog on the gravel road to Fair Harbor. If you're boating up from GR, it's pretty exposed till your gas up location in Kyuquot. Worth calling them first to be sure they've got gas.

Nice boat, BTW, looks like a Hewescraft? I've got the 220 Ocean PRo.

Thanks, very comfy to travel and fish.

Chuck....there are a number of places to stay but not sure which ones will cater to bringing your own boat? When on my annual trek up there we are in a private lodge but wait until finaddict chimes in as he and couple of buddies tow their boats into Fair Harbour and stay at a spot in the Village of Kyuquot.

Great, great area.....absolutely love it. As Sangstercraft said....it CAN be spotty at times as the waves of fish roll through. I have had some gangbuster days/trips and a few that have been mediocre. I would stick to the times frames mentioned as well but they are not ALWAYS the rule. ;) Have a buddy who lives there and in late August 2 years I ago the lodges/guests were pretty much all gone/done for the season in late August and the locals were nailing LOTS of BIG, BIG fish! Have also been there in July one year a number back and had really slow fishing. It's all about those waves of fish coming through.

Getting out offshore is where the action has gone crazy for us on some days; no need to run WAY out to the highway but Kyuquot Reef and that general area north/south a few miles out is generally pretty good. I am sure you'd take this into account but don't forget the slot limit for the surfline/inside waters as it usually kicks in on the 15th of July up there. Fishing around Spring Island on the inside can be pretty good too as well as spots inside the surfline north/south. Definitely ask the locals where they are headed as they don't seem to be too competitive amongst themselves up there as there just isn't the pressure to worry about. I'd be happy to put you in touch with my buddy up there as well.

Beautiful, beautiful area though.....lots of wildlife, great views, not piles of boats to contend with; just a great spot I look forward to going to every year.

As far as places to stay....ask finaddict about his spot which I know you can bring your own ride. There is also Matt Guiguet (sp?) which I think is 'fishingkyuquot.com but the property is called Rugged Point Lodge; they may have 2 properties in there now. There is also Murphy's, Kyuquot Beach House, I think one called the Sea Otter Lodge as well. Can always just google Kyuquot Fishing and you'll get hits from the small number of proprietor's in there.

Call the general store and ask for sue. They have a 4 bedroom place above the store for rent. They also have a house with a private dock. Her sister Sam has the old restaurant that has a downstairs and a top level they rent. Sam also has a small house for rent. There is also a hotel up there with a private dock. Spring island is the honey hole for big springs but they close it on July 15 most of the time. On a nice day you could run up to brooks which doesn't see a lot of fishing pressure. The reef is about 6 miles from spring island can be good for bottom fish. The rock pile a little north of that has some nice Hali fishing. If you can't get a number for Sam let me know I got her numbers for up there. I also have her home number.

The plenski's from Nanaimo also have a nice bed and breakfast on the right just before the harbour. They rent rooms also.

Give Scott a call at Slam Bang Lodge they have a self contained cabin with self catering or you can stay in 1 of their rooms and have them supply meals. Great place great hosts.

I haven't been up that way for quite a few years. Fishing was fantastic. Yes, you indeed do need to be off shore at times but it is so worth it.

Fuel, used to be a huge problem. We shipped in a barrel on the Uchuck a week ahead of our trip and David Murphy lent me his pump. All arranged well in advance. Things are different now, as I heard there is fuel in Fair Harbour. I think David told me yesterday that fuel was $1.65 per litre last summer so bring the bank...or don't tell your wife how much you blew on gas.

You should go. An incredible place to fish, but watch out for rock piles. There are lots that are NOT marked on the charts depending on where you go.

Good plan to call the General Store, they know everyone and can hook you up with a place to stay.
