New to this website so first of all I would like to say that after browsing as a guest for a while I am now one of the committed and glad to be here.
As my first thread I would like to bring to your attention the planned run of river project for the Kokish River on Vancouver Island. In the current issue of Sport Fishing BC an article by Paul Bech, Director of the Steelhead Society of BC, gives a brief rundown of the project. The proposal needs to be stopped dead in its tracks.
Here in the Fraser Valley a similar project was shot down in flames following two town hall meetings wherein the opposition was overwhelming and resounding. This approach works. HUNTBC was involved here.
Also a recent, and ongoing, development in the Coquitlam area involving a further tightening of discharge of firearms restrictions was sent back to committee for substantial amendments after Coquitlam City council were inundated with a huge number of snail mail letters, phone calls and emails protesting further closures. All this initiated on the HUNTBC website.
On a larger scale the BC Government threw out the application by the GOBC to reopen allocation meetings despite already having signed off on an agreement. After a huge letter writing and email campaign by the BC Wildlife Federation, and assisted in no small way by the HUNTBC website, the GOBC lost out on their bid when the BC Gov't refused to re-open allocation meetings.
The point of all this is to say that we fishers must be no less aggressive in stopping this proposal on the Kokish River and this website forum is the ideal platform to launch from.
With the Liberals in deep trouble at the polls they will be most susceptible to any issue which threatens them further. Lets make Kokish River one of them.
