Kicker control

hi,

looking for options on single handed controlling the kicker while trolling downriggers, boat is a 21 foot with a top, 150hp outboard main engine and 9.9 kicker.

thanks in advance for you advise

I have manual everything. Pull starting, manual fuel, gear and direction control . Simple to install and I sit on the back corner so I am always near the rods. No battery required, best if you have separate fuel tank too, then you have completely redundant system. I use a tiller extension, before I used a peice of PVC pipe ( I think 1.5" diameter) with SS hose clamps to control fuel and direction.

Think about getting a prop guard too.

It works for me.

Thanks eastpoint,

the but kicker don't have a tiller handle, and a big yes on the prop guard i lost a ball already

If you have hydraulic steering- build a tie rod from main. Mine is simply a piece of SS threaded rod with spring loaded (pintle grabbers/female) on the ends. Sorry don't have a pic handy. Air compressor parts (brass or SS) are the norm for these things. The motors have the (male) parts fabricated off the pivot points. Hard to explain but it is really quite simple once you have seen it.
If you have cable- use EZ-Steer.
Put your control near your helm. gl

I use an easy steer linkage and a trollmaster for engine speed control,
works awesome and really like the idle feature on it.
best price I could find on a new trollmaster was still shipped from cabelas usa, even a little better now with our strong dollar.
hope this helps

Go to west marine or some other marine supply shop and order in a steering arm to connect off your main engine to the kicker handle. It costs around $30 dollars is all and works like a dream. I use it on my 16' double eagle so I can stay warm in the front of the boat and relax in comfort while trolling in any conditions. And if you get into real trouble you are at the helm so you can always start up the main engine and power up if you ever need.

Most of these threaded rods and ends that you get come in a basic steel, so I would set it to length, and then get it sandblasted and painted to prevent rust! Some simple rustoleum spray paint will suffice.

TR-1 Gold Autopilot. Expensive as all get out and worth every penny. I fish out of a 22' Weldcraft with a 250hp main and 8hp Yamaha T-8 kicker. The TR-1 keeps her running straight and true regardless of what the current, wind and swell are doing and I can always overide speed and direction with the hand control. It's nice to let the TR-1 steer so I can keep the gear in the water running properly.

x2, I have had the exact same set up on my last 2 boats - total control, plus you can immediately move the boat where you need it to net a fish.

x3. I did the same. had an EX steer that mounts to the back of both motors before. What a hassle. trying to hook up the tie rod in any kind of a sea was downright dangerous. Went to the Stearns tie rod at the front of both motors and ran remote cables to the helm. The tie rod was about $50. The remote throttle and gear shify was a lot more (couple hundred). Boat tracks sooooo much better on the hydraulic steering, the pilot is out of the way of the riggers and I can stay out of the wind and rain if I am solo.

Far superior to being on a tiller.

Thank you for the replys,

i really am looking for a independant steering system, getting to the main steering wheel on my boat is not really a good option. especailly if i ever catch a fish!! HA HA

anyone else use a tr-1 or simillar?

I just had Dave at All Marine in Parksville install a Troll EZ on mine. It steers with a remote hand held toggle running a small hydralic cylinder. Works damn fine, just took a little to get used to steering with the toggle

Just instaled a Panter electric steer unit on my 2359 trophy. Attaches through the tilt tube of the kicker and wires into the battery or battery switch uses minimal draw turns the motor very quickly . Has a 24 foot remote cable and there is a wireless unit for an extra 200 or so the unit itself runs 500 to 600 depaending where you get it from. I 'm very happy with the set up so far, just hope it will last a long time problem free.

dmurph how do you find the steering on your kicker. i just took mine off panther remote.i can not get it to turn full in ether direction.followed instruction to the tee.it will only turn about half turns.

I think that is the point of the 2nd helm at the rear with throttle controls. You have full control at the fishing or business end of the boat. If you have power tilt on your kicker you can leave the main and kicker hooked up when you tilt the kicker and drive off on the main engine. No hassle.

I used the troll ez sytem on my last boat, electric over hydraulic. Toggle switch steering anywhere in the boat was great. I didn't like the kicker cylinder in the kit so I bought a seastar center mounted cylinder. Remote throtlle mounted near the helm.

My new boat has an electric helm with a steering cable to move the kicker, seems a bit slow but haven't tried it for trolling yet, still toggle switch steering.

Maybe try this sytem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXl_kMmOQgQ

I have been using this system for a few years now. Use silicon or Sika Flex and run a bead around the seams and where the wires enter the unit and you should be good for a long time.

Hey NL,
I will cast another vote for the TR-1. If it's an independent system you're looking for then this is it!
Yes, it's expensive but with the strong Canadian dollar you can probably score a deal at portlandmarineelectronics.com
Ask for Todd and tell him Nelly sent you!

If you've spent any time at all wrenching on your boat then the TR-1 system is no real biggie to install.
There are five components:

-Electric/Hydraulic pump
-Steering ram that mounts to your kicker above the lower unit
-Remote throttle mounts to the kicker's carburator
-Compass ball which mounts forward of your boat's pivot point
-Hand held remote and deckmount (on/off) switch

Optionally, there is a wireless control fob that looks like a keyless remote entry pad for a car. The wireless hangs around your neck and allows you throttle and steering control from anywhere in your boat!

The Electric/Hydraulic pump needs to live in a splash-proof location and the Compass ball will have no problems staying happy up forward in your 21', tucked up under the gunnel.

Depending on your use, you should enjoy 3-4 years of trouble-free use and then there will be some maintenance but overall, it's worth it.

The TR-1 is basically a silent, invisible fishing buddy that steers an inhumanly straight course, takes up no room, drinks no beer and doesn't fart or smoke.

It's fish netting skills are non-existent however...:p
