Have I given up on Interior Fraser Steelhead?!?!?! I’ve sent numerous messages on that front to various conservation organizations and individuals, just in the past week. The results are the same every time. DFO is impenetrable. Look at their Fisheries Notices web site and the number of net fishing openings (demonstration fisheries, economic opportunity fisheries, FSC fisheries and commercial fisheries) already completed, presently underway or pending. No one who knows anything about those fisheries believes the conditions attached to any of them re steelhead conservation are ever adhered to. Foxes guarding hens. I’ve not received a reply to a single one of my messages. How about if some of the readers here fire off their own objections to the DFO decision makers?
When people are done with IFS maybe start paying attention to the carnage that has been going on courtesy First Nations fisheries in the Somass River and the top end of Alberni Inlet. Steelhead are a long forgotten item there. I’ve yet to see any expression of concern other than my own.

If I were to repackage Mark Twain’s dictum that “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting its boots on,” it’d go like this “A viral video can make 56 laps around the world while an impeccably crafted blog post is still putting it’s boots on.”
Surely there are at least some A-list progressive celebrity types that could focus attention on this matter and turn up the heat on functionaries and bureaucrats with a single 53 second blurb they record on their phone and upload via their massive global audience in a way that nothing else possibly could. Surely *someone* operating in the Skeena system has a way to reach out to some much beloved celebrity that’s also a passionate fly fisherman to raise awareness? It’s a hail mary, but has anyone tried to get in touch with Yvonne F*cking Choinard, or Jimmy Kimmel, or hell…Huey Lewis? Failing that – there’s gotta be someone who knows how to get in touch with a hedge fund manager or two with some pull?
Last time I was up in the drainage 3+ years ago I heard rumors that there was a fellow who was passionate enough to buy out an entire lodge/section for himself for a couple of weeks and run up a tab well north of $100K in the process. Where’s that guy going to fly his LearJet if the run on the Skeena system collapses?
I wish I could do more but I’m just a regular no-name rando despairing over the prospects of ever sharing the wonder and majesty of the Skeena system via these incredible fish.

Great comments AJ. Let’s see if anyone chimes in. Yvon Chouinard once spent a fair amount of time up Skeena way. I’ll see if I can tap into sources that my be able to make a direct connection. Heaven knows there are some big money people with extensive histories of fishing Skeena steelhead. Anyone out there care to offer up an avenue or two?
