Round Table members are motivated, concerned, well intentioned people, none of whom display any indication of knowledge, awareness and/or concern for steelhead impacted by the fisheries the group is now given primary responsibility to plan. A public statement in reference to steelhead made outside the Round Table forum by one of its members says all: “Let’s also be real here – very unlikely there is a realistic chance a window closure or selective fishery strategy that could be implemented without considerable effort and time. Thinking otherwise is simply a load of idealism without regard for a well designed implementation strategy IMO.” The Table is advocated by many, members and non-members alike, as the model for application elsewhere in British Columbia.

What he describes is one of the many reasons the Stamp / Somas system is largely devoid of steelhead these days.
A species I built a lifestyle around is under ridiculous pressure...

With no end in sight... :(

Sums it up pretty well. No voice for SH.

Being the author, I wish to respond. The comment I made is/was intentioned to be a realistic as opposed to idealistic assessment of what can reasonably be accomplished in the present environment that exists both inside and outside the RT process. To suggest the comment represents a lack of concern, motivation or desire to address the steelhead issue is nothing short of mis-informed. To the contrary, the issue has been raised, and is on the agenda for further discussion at the A23 HRT. Requests for assessment data etc. Also mis-informed - the Province of BC Steelhead Bio will be participating in the HRT post-season review scheduled to review the fishery including concerns raised regarding steelhead encounters in various net fisheries.

Your comment (BTW Nog I know its not your comment) simply represents IMO a grossly mis-informed personal attack. Shooting the messenger is a great way to get people like me to simply give up and walk away and leave you and other like minded folks to get things done by complaining on an internet forum as opposed to becoming directly engaged in trying to make a difference.

Grossly misinformed?

Hmmm...

I can assure you that his assessment regarding steelhead interceptions, and the lack of them in our local system due to just that are on the mark.
The reasons why are apparent.
To most...

Regards,
Nog

Thanks, I will await the data and assessment from the Provincial Steelhead Biologist when this is discussed at the HRT Post-Season Review. I do hear reports of good summer run steelhead in the upper Stamp tho....although, I do think given the low water conditions it may be time to consider closing the river due to water temps etc.

Subject: RE: ECVI In-river Salmon Fishing Closures

Hello again all,

As an update: These closures will apply across Vancouver island (west coast included) with some exceptions that will be announced when more details are finalized.

Subject: ECVI In-river Salmon Fishing Closures

Good afternoon all,

As you all know we have been experiencing some very serious drought conditions on the island for this time of year. We have some conservation concerns surrounding recreational fisheries on systems with low flows and high water temperatures. The department is looking at closing salmon fishing on the majority of east coast Vancouver Island rivers until further notice with some exceptions. These closures would be temporary until we get some much need precipitation and temperature relief. Some systems will be exempt from this, more info will be communicated once a final decision is made.

If you have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Mark Frisson

That particular fellow is bordering on being completely useless.
But you already knew that...

Cheers

My questions is how many times since the round table was started has the Province of BC Steelhead Bio participated in the HRT post season review or any other meeting of the round table? In addition, how many times has the issue of wild steelhead by catch been raised in the round table process since the inception of the group? Is this a recurring topic?
