Jigging For Hali.....

When you jig for Hali ( NOT trolling or anchored stationary spreader bar setups)........

What type and pound test do you use for your main?
Do you use any kind of mono leader on your main?

Do you ever use a mooching reel...or only level-wind -type reel?

Beefier rod?

50 or 65 lb braid with 6 feet of 60lb mono leader so I can cut it back when it gets chafed by lings. I would say the rod depends on how heavy the jigs are and how many hours you can jig it without becoming tuckered out. My collection of low end stuff now includes a trevala with a Battle 6000 spinning reel, a TLD 15 on a 5'8" rapala speed jigging rod, a penn 330 on a 6'6" hali rod, and a Jigmaster 500 on an 8'6 Shimano TDR trolling rod. Some are better suited to shallow ling fishing.

We mainly jig for halis while anchored with spreaders down. We find we catch around 40% our halis on jigs, and 60% on the spreaders. We use Okuma Magda Line counter and Shimano Tekota reels on 7' Ugly Stick Tiger one piece medium light rods. For line we use 65lb braid, I use Spiderwire Stealth and my dad uses Power Pro but there isn't much difference. I wouldn't use 80lb or larger braid as when the current starts going the extra diameter will make it harder to stay on the bottom. For leader we use 60lb mono so if we get snagged it will break before the braid (wrap your line around the gaff to break it off the bottom). For jigs I make them myself with weights between 200g - 420g and get them nickel plated.

We went out on Sunday but didn't catch any halis on spreaders or jigs, but we did catch enough bait for the next few trips on the jigs. We managed to catch 7 Sole, 2 Pacific Cod, and 1 herring so it can provide a good source of live bait for your spreader bars.
