Jenkins Marine for pod build?

Hi all,

Anyone have any experience with Jenkins marine out of Sooke? They had some very reasonable prices for a pod build/install.

My original plan was to purchase a bracket from PDR in Washington .. but with the current exchange its become too expensive.

Would love to hear any feedback from those who have had any custom brackets/pods built by Jenkins.

Thanks!

lol - yes Jenkins built me a pod and fiberglass dog over the doghouse in my seasport 22.

After +/- 3years of use, it still looks as new. I’m no expert, but the build quality was very good, no flaking of the powder coating etc.. all welds / corners are very smooth and it fits my stern like a glove. It’s a good looking pod too and suits the boat. I did appreciate that I could walk around the Jenkins yard and check on progress during the build and chat with the guys. They also removed my doghouse and built a bilge hatch. All fiberglass work was very good and still looks great and feels solid today. Price was around $13k if I recall correctly.

Unfortunately a lot of things went wrong also.. it took 3x as long as promised and getting updates was painful. They built a the pod too short (the 2021 Yamaha f300 has bigger cowling than the previous model and I guess the older f300’s fit fine? Anyways it hit the transom at top tilt. Corrected it by putting a 1” rigid poly spacer between the engine and pod - works and looks fine but the engine has 1/4” at top tilt before hitting the transom. Left metal debris, shavings and old bolts in my pod - found this when I got home. Gave them a new stainless bow roller to install - they lost it and no apologies / offer to compensate. They also drilled my new bilge hole on the side of my bilge - not the very bottom - so I always have a few cups of water that doesn’t drain :(

Again, quality of workmanship was very good - client service aspects were poor on my build. I’ve heard the opposite from others, but that was my experience.

I would suggest Walter bohn he did mine and NO issues, i have his contact info he has done many of my freinds as well and all are happy

Can 2nd @DuroBoat experience with Jenkins. Wasn’t much clean up done, poor communication, and it took a lot longer, but the work was good. Walter Bohn did nice work, good communication. Would recommend as well.

Yup same here at jenkins pod had loose bolts laying in it lots of drill shavings said about a month took 3 maybe more. Good product in the end
Clay Gunn in sooke is doing some hi quality work

I 3rd Walter bohn he’s done a few different projects for me he’s top notch super knowledgeable guy who takes a lot of pride in his work!

Walter did mine last year, quality product and no BS. He doesn’t have a ton of room so gets on it and gets it done. Great to deal with and sent pics throughout the build.

Looks good but where is the zinc mounting pad?

I would shop around and not get set on one place. I had DSS Welding do mine in Duncan. I chose them because they could get it done when they said they would vs. my timeline. It also never hurts to have some quotes before making a decision who to go with. Nothing worse than waiting months for a commitment, and it seems to be common on some pod builders out there.

I haven't heard that great things on Jenkins from guys that went there, but that was more on timeline issues etc.

Yes I guess you could shop around but when someone have built well over 100 of them and are good builders and recommended by many do what ya want.
I have heard many a horror story from certain places. not to mention any names.
I will also chime in as I asked WHY he built his pod with a well in it and it was explaind to me as the deck is higher for 1 nothing is more annoying as when that pod gets hit by waves and is pushed, and most important when you till motor up the huge connections doesnt get pinched when its completly flat deck the wires going into engine will get pinched badly. also HUGE renforcement. with a well.

Does anyone have any recommendations for fiberglass work (preferably in the lower mainland)?

I am leaning towards getting the transom closed in (and checked structurally, repair if needed) locally. Then have the pod built by one of the recommended shops on the island.
