It's a Good Idea ... to check ownership.

Friend of mine was looking at a used T-8, electric start and remote controls, in Victoria yesterday.
Price was not unreasonable, motor seemed ok, although it showed some signs of the wiring having been altered.
Luckily he took it to SG for a pre-purchase inspection. Motor wasn't everything he hoped it would be, so he passed on the deal. Owner, due to another commitment, left it at SG for pickup today.

Guess the boys at SG took another look at the wiring, determined it had been "chopped" at some time, and checked the 'hot' list.
Yup, it was hot.
Victoria police picked it up yesterday afternoon from SG.

Good on SG for following up.

Now, how does one check for legality of something like that?
Is there a central registry you can check for serial numbers of stolen goods?

Oh, and if you "lost" a 2003 Yamahe T-8, now you know where it is.

hmmmmm had the same engine stolen from my boat a couple days before I bought it in sidney a year and ahlf ago . owner gave me the police report # and stuff but followed up about two months ago and nothing so I threw it out [:0]. Now how would one check ?

You would need the serial number Salty.
Police would have a copy of your original report. Wouldn't hurt to give a call and see if they match.
