Iron noggin?

I know this is "off Topic" But to whoever was telling me adding a mustad 5/0 hook to my spoons would have alot of affect on the spoon action... Have a LOOKY how the pro's are doing it..Big OLE COMMIE hooks... Big Hooks.. Big Fish.! Nice work Iron Noggin! them spoons look BADASS!

Jeffy.....well I'm looking and there's only one picture there that shows hooks on Nog's lures.

They don't look overly large for that particular spoon........which of itself has some size to it overall.

The hook seems to be matched to the size of that spoon.

You can definitely affect spoon action by hook size and weight of hook.

Ya agreed it does have some affect on the wobble or movement of the spoon..but look at those hooks there have to be big commie hooks as he was stating that he was out on a small commie opening..will be interesting to see what size hook;)s he will put on them when they hit the shelves..those must be 8/0 at least.., i have been playing with the spoons lately, and upsizing to 5/0 on my #4 spoons with little if any difference. The Mustad ultrapoint hooks i have been upsizing too seem to be the same weight or even lighter then the stock hooks.

Jeffy.....you mean this kind?

I use these in 5/0 and 6/0 on Coyotes.....they make 7/0 and 8/0 too but they are hard to find around here...

the 5/0 and 6/0 I get at PNT. They use these on TKO spoons factory.

they are quite a bit lighter than the same in stainless..........

They will tend to rust if the bare metal is exposed over time.....but you can touch up the sharpened point with clear nail polish....

It all depends what you want the spoon to do...

Most (but not all) spoons are effected by what is hanging off their back end. In the case of these particular spoons very much so due to their slender shape and concave / convex bearing surfaces. It was designed to run best with a # 2 flipper tail and a # 5 Stainless Beaked Commercial Mustad hook (95170).

I was scrambling to get a handful up for the troll opening, and could not find the flipper tails locally on short notice. To alleviate that, I simply went with the next size up (# 6) in the same hook. The weight difference was pretty much bang-on, and they swam just as I expected them too.

Nog

IronNoggin:- yes....those spoons look deadly and I can hardly wait to give some a bath off ECVI.....very very nice indeed.......

I realize that your spoon is designed to take a fluttertail to get correct action on that spoon ....

What are your thoughts on fluttertails for spoons like Coyote and Titan etc .etc.?

Do you think other spoons fish better with the fluttertail or without?

It's either O'ki or Titan that claims the fluttertail on their spoons outfish the non-fluttertails by a wide margin...

Have you found this to be true on spoons other than your needlefish?

... Do you think other spoons fish better with the fluttertail or without?

Due to the design of the needlefish it does perform best with a flutter tail on it. Helps prevent spinning (think airplane prop) rather than the side to side snake like action with the odd flutter tossed in. The tail indeed helps both stabilize the spoon while promoting that flutter (between the side to side snake-like motions) which I believe helps induce strikes.

On both the troller and sport rigs I've run many varying spoons with and without. There have indeed been times I have seen the flutter tail outperform identical spoons without it. Haven't done much of a study on this, so the Jury is Still Out in my mind anyway. I do know the tails are not all created equal, and some will rust out pretty damn quick. Those I remove immediately before use as I ABHOR rust on any terminals. If they are the good ones (Luhr Jensen seems to have this down right, as does Tomic) I don't see any reason to remove them. It "may" increase performance, but if not, don't think it can hurt...

Cheers,
Nog

These spoons look super fishy Iron Noggin. If you took a job with a tackle company, I'd start buying stocks asap. Couple questions: Are both sides painted? If I was looking to modify some spoons in my tackle box, can I use these paint pens or would recommend something else?

DecoColor® Broad Point paint markers are great for writing and covering larger areas on glass, paper, wood, clay, porcelain, stone, metal and mirrors. The paint is opaque and xylene based. It is lead free, acid free, lightfast, weatherproof and pigmented. Great for crafting, home and office use.

I tried a different brand of paintpen on tackle some time back......these were so-called industrial strength paintpens.

They were terrible......I could rub the paint off with my fingers after they had dried three weeks.

It's like the paint never really cured....

I have a bag full of these for painting art on surfboards. They stuck to fiberglass surfboards well, but I am mainly worried about scent. Don't want to ruin any lures.

Yes, both sides were painted on the upper half. With the white bellied ones, only one side of the belly was painted, the other side left shiny.

No type of pen is going to stick overly well to the polished metal surface of a spoon. Just the way it is. I have used Permanent Sharpies a lot in the past, and still carry a big bag of the suckers around with me most of the time. Never know when a quick alteration or two will be called for. Even though called "permanent" the paint from them does rub off. Usually takes a fish or five before doing so though.
That said, I am much more prone to hauling out the airbrush if I'm looking for something a little more permanent in nature.

Can't see why the one you asked about wouldn't work at least as good as the Sharpies. One way to find out methinks...
Wouldn't worry about the smell overly much. By the time the paint has well dried, it's smelly solvents should be long gone.

Cheers & Good Luck! Let us know how it goes if you give it a whirl...

Nog, I am very interested in trying out some of these great looking spoons you have developed as per previous posts. I see you have them in mirrored and glow options, any plans for some with some UV capabilities?

Thanks for the reply.

I can't think of a more anticipated spoon or lure. OMG they look great and I can't wait to try them in Puget Sound.

Thanks Nog. I really enjoy reading your posts and always learn something from them.
